another week come and gone! and another week of only cell phone photos here, ah well, it is so easy and convenient. must make more of an effort though to bring my camera out sometimes. so many fun things happened this week! my sister lindy and friend rosie, came up for the peace love and guacamole california avocado festival. there were so many people, so much to see. we ate chips and guacamole and drank sangria and elderflower prosecco at an outdoor cafe.

i took a class in wool felt embroidery, and made an owl pincushion. next week we are making a bluebird cushion and a needlebook, i have homework, a lot of little pieces need to be cut out. my friend karen gave me fiskar scissors today, they should make the job much easier.

a letter arrived from africa, maxwell wrote to tell news of his family and village. we met four years ago when chuck and i were in zimbabwe, and visited his small fishing village. finding mail from maxwell makes me jump up and down with excitement. i love this small world feeling. i hope when he and his family receive packages from me they feel the same  :)

last night we saw the AVETT BROTHERS!!! they were here in santa barbara. oh my goodness gracious, i LOVE these boys. i took chuck on a date! i think it's the first time that's ever happened, i think he enjoyed himself as much as i did. that would be A LOT! we were at the stage again (like sigur ros in april). where we stood for three hours, singing, dancing and generally merrymaking with the crowd and band. come back soon avetts! i LOVE you!

Seth and Scott Avett aren't content to merely play gorgeous roots music; to just lay some lovely harmonies over banjos and strings. Performing as The Avett Brothers — with bassist Bob Crawford, cellist Joe Kwon and others — they craft alternately stompy and swoony music that's rooted in a desire for self-improvement. Take their body of work as a whole, and it forms the outlines of a makeshift guide to life, and to being fundamentally decent in the pursuit of something even better.
listen to the avett's newest lp, magpie and the dandelion, due out next week, streaming for free right now on npr radio here.

and this morning, bright and early, it was time to show up for my vip job of 'sand crab monitoring chaperone'. hee hee. my granddaughter sadie's class was walking to the beach to make a study of sand crabs and in effect, the health of our oceans. i think it was a smashing success! a very happy thanksgiving to our canadian neighbors and very happy weekend to you!

more islands, men folk and a knit to share

...i do know how to pay attention, how to fall down into the grass, how to kneel down in
the grass, how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields, which is what i have been doing all day.
   mary oliver, the summer day

some of the wandering i've been doing has been out on the islands again. i brought one of my vintage film cameras last week, and set it in the trail to take this self portrait. i found a manual for this lovely old pentax (bought at a flea market) online at orphan cameras here.

the island fox

they keep getting bolder and bolder. this one came to the portable guide shower for a drink, and then walked so close to me i could have pat him on his tiny little head  :)

in the eastern sierras...
chuck

mountain menfolk, my husband and friends. they climbed mt. whitney (again). this time the east buttress way. chuck is pictured rock climbing up the face. it's difficult to tell in the photo, it's very steep, almost vertical. eeeps. well done men!

a few years back, we went together, taking the trail (not really scary) way to mt. whitney's summit

then, musical menfolk....
the avett brothers are coming to santa barbara!

i have tickets!!!!

family and friends surfing menfolk

my son came up with friends, their first time to santa barbara

the sun surf and sea breeze all came too, to make sure they'd have a fabulous time.

a new sweater
(unblocked, ah well, it's finished and just in time!...)

and hat

this is the cobblestone by jared flood, i think maybe the three thousandth one made on ravelry. hee hee. my dear husband is heading out on an epic adventure, to the far north. i tried to surprise him with this, and came close, but he was persistent, who is it for?? it's made of baby alpaca, so so soft. and warm, which was most important. i made him two hats also, the one pictured above is called the wolf pack. he is hoping to see a wolf in the wild, well, one of the things he is hoping to see. i'm hoping for him too, and maybe this hat will be a totem for him, keep him warm and give him luck.
raverly notes for the sweater and hat

not much time for photos, i was able to take these while he was at work at the beach
 (red lifeguard shorts)

wearing his other new hat, the sweater all tucked in his backpack and ready for it's first big adventure!
safari njema (travel safely) honey, i can't wait to hear your stories!
