pretty green

oh why did i talk about the sun coming out? it was inevitable the fog would roll back in, it's june, in california, on the coast. it's what happens. i took more photos of it (the fog) and our neighbors greenery growing into our yard.  lucky for us since there's not very much time for my own garden. but i did take a terrarium making class here, and now have this pretty tiny landscape that is easy to manage!

here are some instructions i brought home to share with you:

there are three types, closed, partially closed and open dish gardens. a closed system will require water once every 3 months. a partially closed, about once a month. and an open dish will need water at the same frequency as any other open style planted container plant.

1. find a sturdy container, it doesn't need holes for drainage.

2. choose plant families that have the same water and light requirements.

3. for ferns, your first layer will be an inch of some sort of rock or chunky glass. the next layer will be one half inch of activated charcoal, spread completely over the bottom layer. activated charcoal is available at most pet stores and helps to keep the terrarium disease free. it also helps to stabilize the moisture. the third layer is potting soil, 2 to 4 inches.

4. now add the plants, make indents where your plants will be and gently lower them into the vessel. tamp down. then lightly but thoroughly water.

5. if you are making a xeriscape, or low water terrarium, you can skip the charcoal and the soil and just plant directly into the glass or stone. these require very little water.

6. once your plants are in, feel free to augment with 'stuff'. make miniature homes for gnomes. add sticks or larger rocks. tiny toys are fun additions. ceramic animals or mini statues might add some whimsy as well. or be a purist and add nothing but plants.

most important, never over water, better dry than wet, and have fun!

for inspiration click on twig. i want to live in one of their terrariums. so lovely.

hello sun

there is something spectacular about first light after days of fog.
today was an 'inspired by sun' day, swimming laps early, to the marsh after, knitting knitting knitting, the butterfly preserve in late afternoon (chuck needed photos), out to dinner, and now back to knitting.
the first photo has this effect added. it's simple and fun to do.

fog

murky conditions call for bundling up on walks, making soup and knitting! while working away on a new shawl, the elizabeth zimmerman circular pi shawl (beaverslide wool, in woodsmoke heather colorway, a beautiful color in it's foggy greyness)  i received my first big order, and it called for color.

here's what arrived last night, and will be knitted into thirty six new 'green sleeves'

 for this shop

this is an example of what i'll be making, reusable cup sleeves

 times three

we definitely have our (foggy) day cut out for us, right owen? (he is apparently all over the pelican trauma! and little nebby is doing quite well also.)

the nature of

it happened near the end of the day, after another long visit to my mom's. my brother had stepped outside to catch the last of the setting sun when an unkindness of ravens drew his attention to the end of the road. there, to his horror, was my mom's cat, nebby, face to face with a coyote.

michael ran shouting, hearing the urgency of his voice we ran outside as well. he was throwing his shoes, yelling and running towards the pair. there was little nebby, back paws firmly planted on the tar, front one swinging at the three times as large as her, canine. the coyote didn't budge until michael was on top of it. and then it slowly ambled away.

we watched nebby run and try to climb a tree, but she fell instead from the trunk, huddling at it's base. my stepdad reached her first. gathering her up he gently carried her back to the house. she was in shock, hardly moving.

we hoped she was okay, only badly shaken, until we noticed the blood on my stepdads shirt. her back paws were torn and raw. some of the fur on her neck was gone. she was taken to the vet.

they found two bite marks on her chest, but xrays showed no internal injuries. she is on medication now and has a special kitty litter for her little torn paws and as a precaution she was given a rabies shot.

we called my brother a hero, he surely saved her life. but i believe the ruckusing ravens deserve credit as well.

the very next morning chuck took owen for an early morning beach run. owen was attacked by a juvenile (yet full grown) pelican. not once but twice. luckily chuck ran interference and no harm was done (it was close), except to wee owens ego.

nature can be beautiful and brutal. after the last few days i couldn't wait to get back in the marsh for some soul soothing. the kind of nature i understand.

wishing peace and sunshine to warm you all the rest of the week.

early summer

my eldest daughter is working on completing her emt and lifeguard certification, that will make six lifeguards in our family now! ( my kids were junior lifeguards, chuck and hannah are certified now) my eldest son is working on his down in fiercly competitive los angeles county. what this means is even if you pass everything, the only thing that counts is the thousand meter open ocean swim. in my girl's case she has to finish in twenty minutes.

right now, although the days are warming up nicely, the pacific ocean temperature is around 59 degrees. horribly cold. so we have been swimming in the pool. i've been coaching her since i have a bit of experience and she's out of practice . it's been a lot of fun, however, since the swim is in two weeks we need to make the switch to the beach. this is something i'm beyond dreading (we both are) but i've promised to stay with her through the training and the actual swim.  if your listening weather gods, please warm up the ocean a wee bit, and while your at it stop those dreadful tornado's. thank you.

(i hope it's not like this)

( but more like this)

(with dolphins to help her along)

one nice thing about being nearly out of a job is that i can go to our local farm stand during the day. i love being there with only a few people, discussing recipes and uses for all the lovely vegetables and fruits and even beans. yesterday though, it was the bouquet of sweet peas i brought home, that made my day.

here, i picked some for you!

have a wonderful weekend everyone!
