once a seed

photo by Dan Harding/pacificimages.biz

flowers for gazing and smelling, flowers for photographing, flowers for pressing, can you ever get enough of flowers? i made these pressings for my daughters birthday on thursday. but she'll have to wait a few more weeks before they are ready to be framed. i got her her own flower press too. she'll be happy.

chuck is wandering through coreopsis on anacapa island, on a photo flower safari. if you would like to see a recent slide show of some of his wildflower images, go here.

    with so many beautiful flowers where you live it would be a great hobby! you don't need a press, heavy books will do fine.

    thank you! i love his photos too, i am so proud of him. i am so happy you enjoyed them.

    the flower pictures are from various weeds and blossoms, ferns, gerber daisys, anything i can find. i wanted to press some from the desert but you aren't allowed to pick those flowers.

    tulsa,

    i think you'll have a lot of fun, you don't need a press, a book will do.

    whitney lee,

    i think it would be perfect for you, it takes up no space if you already have books and only a small amount of table to play with your flowers once they are pressed and ready!

  22. Lori there is so much love in what you do!

    I missed you on my journey. It was a rough one, but amazing all the same. My photos aren't nearly as good as yours, but I'll try to get them up for you very soon. (I went rhino hunting with my camera and never caught one, but I did get a decent crocodile photo.)

  23. I LOVE, LOVE, Love the LOVE picture ~ once you press the flowers do you just glue them onto the paper or do you paint them with a clear adhesive? I am curious on the process ~ maybe that could be a future post? I would love more details ! You are an artist on so many levels ! Celebrate!

  24. kj, thank you for your comment, thank you times ten! you are welcome anytime for dinner! we are getting ready to have another slide show, chuck still takes film, so that's how we do it. it's always a lot of fun, he's a good speaker (unlike me)i love to see peoples faces as they watch and ask questions.

    Sophia,
    thank you dear! i was thinking the same about yours, thank you for letting me come and look at the snow!

    Silke, thank you! pressing flowers is just so quick and easy, but with such lovely results. don't you love it?! thank you for the kind words about chuck, he'll be happy.

    Jeri,
    i feel as i've just been there, your journal is amazing, i'm really looking forward to more. and thank you so much!
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Deb,
    thank you! i used a tiny, tiny paint brush with glue and tweezers to get the bits just right. they'll stay under a big stack of books for another month, after staying in the press for several weeks. then it can be framed. thats a good question about preserving though, i'll have to google it. i think anything other than a spray of some kind would be too much since these are so delicate.
  26. What a brilliant idea! And so beautiful, too. Art which was once a seed to a beautiful girl who was once a seed. Happy birthday to your daughter!
    Come to think of it, I have a couple of flower presses around here somewhere...and they have things in there that I squashed several years ago.... I guess it's about time to see if they're done.
    My GOSH, Chuck's photos were incredible! I love the idea of going on a flower safari. Must do that someday.
