giving

The first part of this post I borrowed from Kelly Light and her blog Ripple. If you don't know about it yet please pay her a visit. If you are a lover of art, nature and our planet, this will be terribly important to you.

From Kelly:
Donation Details - How this works
Each sketch card on this blog is $10.00. The $10.00 is a donation to help the animal victims of the Deep Water Horizon Gulf Oil Spill. Every penny is donated. The two Non-Profits that are benefiting are The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies and The International Bird Rescue Research Center. You can purchase a card if you donate directly to one of the non-profits and email me the confirmation and your address to ripplesketches@verizon.net. The artist will mail you the signed card.

We don't have to feel helpless. We can help. Our small actions together will ripple outward.

In all human affairs, there are efforts and there are results. The strength of the effort is the measure of the result.

Thank you for reading about Ripple, and thank you if you go. I think you'll see a lot of your friends there, donating their art. I still can't believe how brilliant an idea this is. I read one of the artists say that maybe it will be your ten dollars that will pay for a bottle of shampoo to clean an oil covered bird. Please donate.

I want to give something too, but I'm really not an artist. Then, I had an idea, for every comment left here i'll donate a dollar to Ripple. And to say thank you to you, I made up something for a give~a~way. Please leave a comment if you would like to be in a drawing (see photos below) I also hope that anonymous readers will say hello and make a comment too, I would really like that. I just realized that lori times five has had over 46,000 visits and over 65,000 page views in the almost two years i've had it. Thank you truly.

This bottle (which at one time held olive oil, i scrubbed it really well) is full of sea glass, I counted for awhile and then lost it after 150, so that is a lot of glass! i also added some pretty pieces of abalone shell and one or two worn pottery pieces (i love those). There's plenty of aqua (my favorite) and green, white, brown and blue. I don't know what i did with the cork, so i used a very large piece of sea glass in the opening. I made a tag out of a vintage topographic map, to give an idea where this glass was collected.

If you would like to have this bottle please leave a comment by next Tuesday, June 22, 6 p.m. pacific standard time. I'll post the winner shortly after. And yes, I'll happily ship it anywhere.

Thank you for being such kind souls and good friends, I really truly appreciate you. Madly and deeply too.

  10. Thank you very much for contributing to the ripple-blog and purchasing my tern print, which is on its way.

I hope to make some more pictures over this weekend...after all, nature is the biggest source of inspiration.

Also, really appreciate the abundant generosity of this post...I think, the intent is what drives the idea of giving more than anything else and the serene Siddhārtha Gautama seems to concur with your colorful bottle of sea pebbles :)

I love the abalone shells (?) and the way you packaged the beach glass. See how inspiration finds you? Just the other day you were wondering what to do with all of it!

I made 3 pieces of art for Ripple. Kelly was genius for contacting Illustration Friday folks! What an unselfish, wonderful act this all is.

  34. Lori,

My younger one has been having sleepless nights worrying about the marine life at the site of oil spill. She said yesterday that I wish no one had ever discovered oil. I told her that then she wouldn't be go from one place to another so easily. She said that's fine and that she could ride a horse to wherever she needs to go (she recently started taking riding lessons).

Thank you for letting me know about 'ripple' - I will go home tonight and donate something and tell my daughter that we dont have to feel completely helpless.

And about the sea glass jar - I will keep my figners crossed - that jar is so beautiful.

    love,

  42. I LOVE SEA GLASS! What a wonderful and generous thing to do! But I have to say - why not sell pieces of sea glass and donate the funds? I bought a necklace with sea glass in Hawaii and it was almost $100. He was selling them like hot cakes.

P.S. I will also donate $1 for every comment you receive. Just let me know the amount by email. Thank you for thinking of this great way to help the animals in the Gulf.
