a week of knitting and other things

this week i love:
every comment and email and good thought on my last post
beach for fun, seeing darling puppies and big crabs!
knitting more pockets
beach for work (needing photos of the wetsuit on chuck) for review
working at my other job
and more knitting
new music
teaching knitting at the shop and new homeschool students
wool choosing for the travel project i'll bring to africa, thank you karen for your help
a long phone call from a faraway friend
and a new bone for owen in the mail, thank you geli!

this weekend:

a friend invited me to a neighboring town, to blue hill farms

where we met libby

a cashmere goat

and saw her having her coat sheared

her new summer wear  :)

we saw this mushroom, which is around a hundred years old. it will be used to dye fibers

we said hello to the farm residents

and took their photos

i wished i could bring this little sweetheart home, i think owen (my doggy) would approve

we saw demonstrations of sheep to shawl, i met a designer that had brought some of her pieces worked in libbys fiber

i could be happy here

afterwards we had lunch and did a little window shopping in town

didn't we just see you two at the farm?  hee hee

ending with dessert made this a perfect day, week. this little one had strawberry gelato, her mama had honey lavender and green tea and i ordered ginger spice and apricot. did you know apricot is the most popular flavor in italy?

the first pockets have arrived (already!) and packing has begun.

  2. What a perfect way to spend the weekend Lori. How amazing to dye fiber with a mushroom, and 100 year old mushroom is mind blowing! Are you still going to take your class on dyeing fiber? I want to hear all about it. I love the little 'love' home, I think I would be happy there too!

  6. I don't have a bucket list, but if I did the first thing on it would be 1. To visit Lori in California. (I know Leanne would agree). Your first picture is breathtaking.

Ah the cashmere goat. I'll take three of them.

  10. ♥ those gelato flavors have me salivating...they sure sound delish!!! what a lovely cashmere goat. SO...what color will that HUGE mushroom dye the fibers? Have you read "Gathering Blue" by Lois Lowry? I always think of woad, which will dye blue, the first time, then peach (I've heard) the 2nd time!

  12. Oh my, Lori! So many beautiful images. The ones that had me smiling are Owen with his new bone and adorable Libby! Blue Hill Farms looks like an absolutely fantastic place to visit. I could live in that little cottage and be very, very, very happy! Isn't it amazing how wool can be taken from a wadded mess to ball of gorgeous yarn in no time!!! We saw ladies doing it in Nepal, pulling the wool through those brush paddles (there's probably a name for them). I found the whole process fascinating. Lunch and dessert looked great too. Wishing you a great new week. Tammy

  16. Lori,

Thank you so much for taking me along this dreamy road full of animals, knitting, food, and the sea. I have loved every glimpse of your past week and think I would very much like to have you as a knitting teacher.

I only have one small problem. I think you have kidnapped my King Charles Spaniel. Seriously identical although yours is possibly older than our Gaspard?

    Africa is drawing nearer...

  21. Dear Lori, what a fantastic week you have shared with us. I love everything about it. And guess what I love most, well, Libby, of course! What a dream it must be to spin her wool. The designer pieces look sooo wonderful! Oh, yeah, this fiber to yarn thing has really got me going - I am getting my own spinning wheel by next week :-))
I wonder what color will come out of that huge old mushroom. It must be very, very valueable dye, right?
I am wishing you all the best for the exhiting, coming days of packing, preparing, calming, enjoy it all and take it fully! Love, Gesche

    2. thank you gesche, the wool was amazingly soft, i am hoping someday to purchase a little to try. the colors the mushroom are supposed to produce are earthy ones, tan, orange, reds. i would have loved to see that! and your own wheel, yippe!

  23. Beautiful, beautiful pics!!!
About the apricot gelato....I'm not sure it's the most popular flavour in Italy, simply because you can't find it so easily like the other fruit options, as lemon, strawberry or pistacchio!!! By the way, I'm Italian!!!

    1. that is good to know alessandra! i now have a good reason to return to the gelato shop (wink wink) i need to let the server know (that told me that)! (and get some more apricot, yum yum)
      :) thank you!

    2. I am Italian too and I agree with Alessandra. As a kid I was allowed strawberry and lemon then it was more creamier flavors. My son has chocolate, of course. Lots of popular favors but my sense is that when you buy ice cream to take to somebody's house and you don't know their taste you get crema(which is like custard), fiordilatte/panna(cream), chocolate and stracciatella(chocolate chip); on the lighter side you get yoghurt and strawberry. My personal favourite is hazelnut. When I go back to Modena to visit I notice the great increase in candy bar flavors : last time I even found bufalina, which is cream but made with buffalo milk!!!

  24. Oh my my my. I don't even know where to start! My brain is all lit up from the sights. That crab! It's huge! All the adorable pups. I'd never seen a cashmere goat before. That chicken shot was fantastic! And then to see their twins at the shop made me laugh. Incredible beauty everywhere. I'm glad you had a spectacular weekend! xoxo

    1. we didn't either julie! the crab was huge. i probably should have put my toes near him for perspective, it was enormous. i wasn't sure if it were alive, and didn't really want to bother him.

  27. Am I a horrible person for thinking "yum" when I saw that crab pic? Love your beach pictures, wish I was there to feel the sand between my toes and breath that salty air

  32. What a beautiful day! I love the goat being sheared, with her face still all fuzzy. I hope they left her with a beard. :D And all the lovely talk about gelato has made me very hungry!

  33. multiple comments: i can't help it...

there are two photos here i quite adore: the first of your magical ocean from above and the second the panoramic view of blue hill farms. Both shut off my present day reality and transported me to the way i saw things in childhood. i kept looking at your shot of blue hill farm and wondered if it was real. Was it my toy farm set as i remembered it? i had to rub my eyes, lori.

and a third: my Mother's name is Rose and she and my Father loved their roses and there is my Mother front and center with her family of roses surrounding her. i know you understand.

you are a sorcerer, lori. it is a gift and you use it very wisely

i'll be back because i haven't even started about your mail and that cashmere and those dogs and chickens and that sheep and that child and italy's most famous gelato, which i see you have stirred a little controversy about and i am smiling at that too.

    feel the love, lori

  34. You know how you commented on that picture of the white house, with the "I could be happy here"? That's how I feel about this blog. Your posts are always a sort of sunny, sandy, day-trip to the beach full of warmth and color and sunshine.

For reals. Your blog brightens my day every time I visit.

  35. I think you could be happy living there. I think there's quite a few of us that could be happy there. Beautiful photos and what a beautiful day. Love the cashmere goat.
( Not wishing to be controversial - I have fond memories of collecting crates of apricots and making ice cream, when I lived in Italy as a child. I'm not italian, so maybe it was an english thing to do. I can't remember buying apricot ice cream. You have brought back memories!)
