leaves deux

'do anything, but let it produce joy'
walt whitman, leaves of grass

this is 'leaves of grass', a pattern so heartmeltingly beautiful i had to make it twice. the first shawl was gifted, with a sigh and a kiss goodbye, it's in good hands now. this leaves is for me. i love it so, it's soft and comfortable and wooly warm. this was knit as part of a knit along i joined, a first for me.

made with brooklyn tweeds loft, a fingering weight, leaves of grass took four hanks of the main color, 'postcard' and one for the contrasting trim, 'fossil'. this is really a wool to fall in love with, jared describes it as gently spun, creating a light and lofty fabric. a joy to knit and to wear. yes, all true. i don't know if i was able to capture the color of 'postcard', because it seems to change, from gray to pink with subtle hues in between. even now as i sit here with it beside me, it's like seeing fog in a setting winter sun, ... if you've had the chance to see loft or it's worsted weight sister, shelter, you'll know what i mean.

there was help in styling these photos this morning, first a blue jay flew in, followed by the tree squirrel and finally a heron. and wild daffodils popped up in the path! seeing the end sign made me laugh, it read my mind, even though i was a little sad to cast off and be done, i think this will be the end of pi shawls for a while!

the book i'm reading, folk medicine, a new england almanac of natural health care from a noted vermont country doctor by d.c. jarvis, m.d., was a gift from my mother in law. first published in nineteen fifty eight, it's easy to see why this is a classic, the good doctors advice is simple to follow, use natural remedies and practice the three r's : resistance (to disease) repair (of injury) and recovery (from illness). my mil is so cute, she buys this book in quantity and hands it out when necessary. she had given me my copy three years ago when i became ill after a trip to africa in two thousand nine, just getting to it now. oops!

  1. I haven't heard of loft, thank you for introducing us! The sight of those daffodils reminds me that it might not be winter forever (even when it feels like it!).
    Your shawl is indescribable. X

  2. Yes Lori, your shawl is so beutiful and I envy you for being such a skilful knitter and to be able to create such amazing things, but what I like best about your post is that you look so happy. And wow, that little blue birdie, and the squirrel posing, and the heron (how do you make them sit still for their picture??). Oh, and the background in your pictures, so breathtaking. And I wish we had fresh daffodils, too, but we still have snow and icy sidewalks. Your post makes me feel good, thank you my friend!

  4. Oh Lori, you astound me..... you've not made just one of these works of art but two!! TWO!!!! I'm in awe!! This is such a beautiful shawl and the recipient of the first one must be delighted. I'm thinking I will pull out that half a sock I started 2 years ago and try for just a little bit of your awesome knitting skills!
Sending love and light to you xxxx

  5. It's extremely beautiful Lori - the design has a very heirloomy look to it. I can't believe you finished 2 in that amount of time! I wonder if there is a beginners Knitalong somewhere out there. Gorgeous scenery over your way too. Mel xxx

  7. Another masterpiece Lori and you make it even more beautiful!

I love seeing the heron in your photo, I saw one yesterday too,
but as for the squirrel they are on my naughty list at the
moment, we are having a difference of opinions,
they think they can eat the leaves on my Lady Bank Roses and I
    would rather they didn't ;)

  10. Oh Lori, it IS heartmeltingly beautiful!! And so are you with your radiant face!

Postcard is one of my very favourite colours in the BT line, and I hope to make something for myself in it very very soon. It's the perfect soft shade for this gorgeous pattern.

  12. Your shawl is absolutely gorgeous, Lori! I am amazed at how beautifully and how quickly you are able to knit such complex designs and I love to see the wonderful way you photograph them too. The flora and fauna in your photos today was such a sweet styling extra! I would love it if we had blue jays over here...such a pretty colour!
    Wishing you a happy week!

  14. Oh Lori your pictures and shawl turned out beautiful. You didn't disappoint. I love the picture of you standing next to the end sign. If the KAL was a race you crossed the finish line first! I truly hope with a good soak and blocking mine will look a fraction of how beautiful yours turned out. That is after I finish it.

  16. hi there, thanks for compliments on my shawl. But OMG yours is lovely! loved that you chose a thicker tweed instead of lace and the colors is just so lovely!!! added your version it to my ravelry faves as well =). love it!!!!

  17. Perfect contrast between the main color and the edging--lovely! Also the location you chose for your photo shoot is just amazing. And--daffodils in January?!--lucky you! :)

  18. Your shawl is gorgeous! Some day I'll figure out this thin yarn thing. I tried to cast on with the alpaca lace last night and it was.. a mess. I decided to blame all the distractions and the poor light. But maybe I'm just a worsted girl. We'll see. Though I still haven't made a decision about what to knit! Ugh!

Your mother-in-law sounds great. (: I'll have to find that book somewhere.

  19. Dear ms beautiful model,

I'm mesmorized by the photo of your shawl and the photo below it of the heron in the grasses. Same colors and shades and textures--the patterns of life are again uncovered by an artist who sees (you you you)

    I see happy here too.

    Love

  27. The shawl is just exquisite! Leaves of Grass is my favorite poem by Walt Whitman...in fact, when I got married, my in-laws gave us a bound copy that I still read. I love seeing the first signs of spring and my hopes that it will come our way over the next month...until then, I stare at your narcissus!

    ReplyDelete
  28. An uplifting and on the brink of spring type post. The shawl is perfect for just keeping your shoulders warm; it is something the way it seems to shift color in every photo. Such beautiful work, Lori. Love the flowers and the green hills!

  29. So beautiful! You wear these things so well, with your gorgeous long hair. My one and only Pi shawl languishes in a cupboard, because it makes me look like an old granny. One day, I will be an old granny, then out it will come, and be perfect. And probably by then, I'll have made ten more to go with it, starting with this one. :)

  35. I am in love with that shawl and the flowers..are they jonquils or daffodils? Interestingly we have northern blue jays here but they are a bit different with a bit more black markings. Your pretty pictures were much needed as it is a snowy, dreary day here today.

  37. ♥ I think that cream color and the lighter color on the edge makes it look like a lace trim. It looks beautiful on you as a shawl and also as a rug! What a beautiful background landscape, too.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Both you and the leaves are so beautiful! I especially love the shots with the light coming through it. Will you wear it, or keep it on a chair to wrap up in? It is so lovely!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Well, it certainly did turn out exquisite! And I ALWAYS look forward to your beautiful photos even when I look at the same landscape here as you do they show it to me through your eyes. But, what I love most of all are the lovely comments about you and your talents! You truly are a most beautiful woman, inside and out and your talents bring joy to so many of us!
