making pi

thank you. for each comment, every word on my last post. heaven only knows how grateful i am,
though i hope you do too.

last summer i made a pi shawl, jared floods 'leaves of grass'. before it was even finished and off the needles there were dreams of another. although the knitting looks quite complicated, i assure you it is not.
(if you knit, would you like to make one too?)

this week a knit along is beginning, for 'leaves of grass' (i'm hoping you'll join)

here is the one i made a few months ago (you can do it!)

wool chosen, waiting to be knit up. sitting upon my christmas present, a new electric stove! temperatures have dropped to the thirties through the night, and snow even made an appearance on the mountains behind us a few days ago, this little fireplace warms things up!

the knit along began on january first. melissa, of girls in sheeps clothing, hosting this kal says that everyone is welcome, there is still time to join. if you have had a desire to make a pi shawl...wouldn't it be fun to knit one together? ( i would love it if you did) and please believe me this one is very simple. there is something about a knit along to offer friendship, help and support if you need it. this shawl calls for approximately 1375 yards of fingering weight wool. although the last one i made was blanket size and made out of worsted. it took closer to 2000 yards. would you like to see where the leaves of grass shawl blanket i made ended up?

it's been adopted and is happily living in brooklyn nyc. the above photo came with this email...
subject: blanket being put to good use.
message: we're cold and we're all wrapped up in momma girl's love
my feelings: indescribable

here is all the info you need to join in:
the knit along : girls in sheeps clothing
the pattern : jared floods 'leaves of grass'
me, if you have any questions: lorix5@hotmail.com
it would be wonderful to see you there!

  2. It looks so lovely and those are such great pictures of you and your family. That is what makes handmade so special. I won't be joining though - I am such a slow coach :). I heard about continental knitting on another blog yesterday and I am going to try that to get my speed up!
    Much love xxx

  4. Wow that is one amazing shawl! I'm currently knitting my very first circular shawl, but I have gone with the beaded Celestarium rather than scary lace ;)

  5. Lori, this is very tempting indeed, your circular shawl is spectacular! I think I'll pop over and have a look at the KAL:)

  6. It's a beautiful pattern Lori and you have me just about convinced to cast on too. I think I have four skeins of Lion Brands Fisherman's Wool in the studio I could use and my poncho can wait a little while so if I can get the cast on then I'm in! You didn't have to twist my arm too hard ;)

  7. Call me sentimental, overemotional, or just human, Lori, but I have happy tears in my eyes after seeing that final picture. There are good things everywhere around us and you Lori are a very talented lady for finding joy and beauty all around you.

    Love,

    S.

  8. Lori, in my dreams I can knit like that. :) I have to be happy watching you knit, and seeing the results. It's almost like I did it, but it looks so much better! lol! And that last picture...well...it's very sweet and happy and full of youth. :) Sending hugs to you xox

  9. Love that your labour of love ended up cocooning your loved ones... this post moved me very much Lori. You seem to approach everything with kind intention and give with an open heart. And can I say, your baby girl looks just like you in this pic! I thought for a minute it was an archived shot of you from another time. Hugs and stay warm my friend. xxoo

  10. I would love to join a knit along but by the time I get the yarn (i'd have to order it on line) you all would be well into yours. And despite your words of encouragement, I think it is a bit out of my league. But will definitely be following-along if not knitting along.

  11. Hmmm. I'll add this one to my list. But currently I'm in the middle of designing a shawl. It's been no end of nightmare (math + me = fight to the death). I have a whole new and infinite respect for pattern designers now.

  13. Ahhhh.....being a mom, I can feel your happiness, love and contentment upon receiving the email photo from Hannah and bo. Be sure to thank her from all of us for sharing a bit of herself tucked under your blanket of love. I'm just a beginner knitter so I will
journey in spirit with you throughout the knit along. Thanks so much for the invite...maybe sometime in the near future I'll join in.

  14. hmmm. maybe. i don't know. it does seem a bit, well, complicated. lol but that is me talking myself out of a challenge again. i was just talking to my oldest daughter about taking challenges, not being like her mama who is scared to put herself out there. so maybe i should. of course it would mean buying more yarn... which i am always game for. lol
love the photo of the shawl on the bed. perfection. :)

  15. If I didn't have to leave next week for a trade show, I'd start this with you. I'll have to play catch up and hopefully time will allow. It's important to do something you love and I find it's the best medicine for when life makes us sad. Take care and I'm so happy to read the words you comment today...your presence means everything to me, XOXO

so very sorry to read your heart is broken....my arm is around your shoulder with a big squeeze and I'll sit with you and knit until the sun comes back around again.

  18. Hi Lori, I've just read your last Post and now after this one I'm feeling a bit teary (happy and sad). I totally get it. The worry over the parcel, the missing child for Christmas, the spa gift, the 4 kids with you for christmas, the arrival of the parcel, your heartfelt Christmas story, your broken heart, the shawl of love, this last photo here of this gorgeous happy couple. I know you will be OK but thinking of you. Mel x

Your first Pi looks to be very much loved Lori, and no doubt your second will be just as cherished. Happy knitting :D

  29. Dear Lori Your knitting is always so beautiful and special. So lovely to see how treasured your first pi shawl is....what a sweet photo! I love your new little fireplace, how cosy it looks, and comforting to sit near while knitting during these wintry days.
    Sending you warmest wishes.

  31. I love where the first pi went :) Very special!

You amaze me. I tried knitting when I was younger and I failed miserably! I think I'll stick to making pictures.

Lori, I changed my blog template (like yours I think) but I can't get my extra stuff to come up in the side columns. Can you tell me which template you have? I love the new look but I don't want everything on the bottom after my posts.

Thanks dear one! I hope you're feeling better these days. And I'm glad your little painting gives you joy♥

    Love the fireplace!
