day off

i went to the beach on my day off yesterday. it is so nice when it's empty, though, soon, as the weather warms there will be a patchwork of towels, blankets and people here. i was alone for awhile, read my book, knit and made a vase out of hollow bamboo and filled it with beach daisies, sand verbena and a seagull feather (i left it in the sand when i left, for someone to find and enjoy). then a girl and her dog came down. she moved far down the sand, spread her towel and lay in the sun. her dog played in the surf, chased the ball she threw and then, when she fell asleep, her dog paid me a visit. winston (i found out his name when the girl came running over realizing where her dog was) moved in with me. hee hee. he plopped down, took up most all the shade, and regularly tapped my hand in a request to be pet.

in the first two photos you can just make out california's channel islands off in the distance. chuck is doing a circumnavigation of the islands in his kayak this week. when i sit on the edge of the shore, i feel closer to him. have a wonderful weekend dear friends

  3. What a lovely way to spend a day - what I wouldn't do for a similar one just now (as I look out of the window at the snow and howling frozen wind, mopping up the latest playground facial injury on my perfect peach of a girl. Sigh.)

Winston clearly has impeccable taste in company. x

  22. Dear wonderful Lori,

I tried, in vain, to leave you a comment last night: I think Blogger was playing tricks again. I'm back simply to let you know that I always feel happy and inspired after seeing your pictures and reading your words. I loved seeing your enchanting creations in your previous posts: your choice of colour, soft and muted, really call out to me at the moment. I love the shades of the sea off the coast of Normandy, where we lived before - greys, bluey greens; and CELADON! Don't you love that name?

    Happy weekend dear Lori.

  27. Wonderful, peaceful day off. Your new doggie friend is very cute, with his little paw on your leg!! The beach looks so empty, but I imagine it must get very full of tourists at certain times of the year.
Spending my weekend at an international hockey competition that my son is playing in. For some strange reason I volunteered to help cook (and clean up!) for 500 mini hockey players!!... oh how I need a day at the beach (or a great big glass of wine).

  28. Beach! Lori, as a Canadian still enjoying the wonders and sub-zero temperatures, that beach looks FANTASTIC and inviting. Thanks for the respite Lori. Love your pictures as always. YOu are talented in so many ways. xxoo
