summer love

this is the rachel bag. soon as i saw the pattern on ravelry, designed by handy kitty in sweden, i was pedaling my bike to the quilt/yarn shop in town, hoping to find the cotton yarn needed to make it. it is so sweet! i followed kitty's very good directions, a little knitting a little crocheting a little sewing. except for the lining, a phone pocket was added, and for the strap, a knitted icord instead of a crocheted one *happy*  i really like this one. and my daughters did too, as soon as i sent them a photo of the completed bag, they instantly replied, make me one too please?!

pattern: rachel bag
yarn : cotton classic tahki stacy charles, inc. color 3003
needles : us 6 (4mm) double points x 5
crochet hook : us g (4mm)
and (if you were wondering) bamboo cell phone case here

a sweet book i loved reading, the summer book by tove jansson, i've shared it before, but it's beautiful and charming... "in the summer book tove jansson distills the essence of the summer it's sunlight and storms - into twenty two crystalline vignettes"

he's returned! my adventuring husband. with exciting stories and a beard, and wearing his sweater!
tomorrow we are back out to the islands, he for work, me to tag along.
this time i'll bring a camera, hiking poles, a book
and my new knit camping container...

to help keep my yarn clean (camping = lots of dirt)

i've written out a few recipes on the outside of this empty oatmeal carton, made a hole on top for the yarn

there is one for small leaves, for fingerless mitts, a hat, slippers

inside holds just enough wool and needles to make any of these, well, two things and a few leaves...

i think i'm going to make another to leave in my truck, a break open in case of (knitting) emergency kit!
edited to add (thank you willfulmina!) there is a tiny pair of snips, tapestry needle, measuring tape on the bottom, all the little things we need! see you soon dear friends xxxxx lori

sharing with ginny and yarn along

  2. That container is pure genius! I want to make one for the car too. Mine will have an emergency pair of socks, plus all the little things you wish you had on a long drive--tape measure, darning needle, scissors, stitch markers, etc. the possibilities are endless!

  4. Can I tell you how envious I am of you. Can I be you for just one day? Please! Oh those pocket book slippers. One of my all time favorite patterns. Do you think my Quill will fit in an empty oatmeal container for my camping trip. No. I didn't think so. Maybe more like an empty box of K-cups from Costco. But you did get me thinking. Dirt and prime alpaca just won't mix. Good thing my Camping Shawl will fit in my yarn along bag. I'm glad to hear your husband has returned. I hope we get to see some pictures and hear stories soon.

  15. oh clever clever you! Love the idea of having a knitting can-not that I go camping and get dirty but I could pretend to be camping. Your knitted bag is beautiful, love the medallion knitting and of course lining makes a knitted bag have structure and a visual present every time you look inside :)

  18. Lori, I'd seen that market bag design somewhere recently (could have been ravelry...summer heat is cooking my memory) and I really like your adaptations. The lining is a wonderful idea and the i-cord strap, too! I do love the tahki cotton yarn and have used it so many times.

The Toasty mitts are another fave of mine. Can you imagine I'm also knitting wooly mitts in hot July. I've made many pair and am trying out another variation with 6 sts/inch.

Welcome back Chuck! Have lots of fun on your island journey. The recycled knit project container is brilliant. Say hello to the little foxes! xo

  43. Hey Lori, I am visiting from Andi's KAL - you were kind enough to visit my blog. Firstly, wow! this is such a beautiful place. Secondly, I had admired your white lace bag on Andi's KAL on the finished projects thread but I had not realised that it belonged to my lovely visitor. I was thrilled to see it here. Thirdly, just before visiting you, I ordered The Summer Book for my sister-in-law for her birthday. It is such a great book, spare and pure prose but with a sweet, profound lyricism at its core. There is some knitterly synchronicity going on here!

  44. What a clever idea...and that bag is gorgeous. I love the summer book too the descriptions of the island and the coast just make you want to be there.

  49. Lori - what a stunning idea for the empty oatmeal container with the couple of patterns written on the outside. It was amazed when reading your latest blog post because your pocketbook slippers (never heard them called that) are EXACTLY what my mom used to knit. She passed away last year and I've been trying to figure out how many stitches to cast on, increase to etc for different sizes.

I still have a pair that she knit for me (but they're now really threadbare). She worked up to 50 stitches and then proceeded to the k2, p2 rib . . . I'm trying to knit a pair for my grandchild but am not sure about how to make them smaller.

Do you have the written pattern that you could send to me?
    My e-mail address is : play2learn@mweb.co.za

Many thanks - I love reading your blog.
