Chuck Graham, Rincon, California

my first real scanned photo! taking the money i was given for a photo (amazing. really.) i bought a printer, scanner, copier, it even makes photos. my family said "could you have chosen a bigger one?" it didn't look so big in the store (next to the others) but now that it's home sitting here next to my small white laptop, it's big.

but, it works! i've figured out most of it, i'm proud to say, without the assistance of my most helpful sons. maybe they can help me with the wireless part though, that is completely baffling to me. but for now, i love this piece of electronic equipment. and that i've done most of the set up on my own.

i chose this photo to scan because i've been sitting here listening to the surf all morning (and all last night too) it's winter here, and we've got a swell. this photo was taken a few years ago, by me, of my husband. he is a good surfer, once upon a time a competitive one too. he traveled around the world competing. did i mention i love this sport and think the smell of wetsuit and salt water the sexiest smell on earth? i tell my husband this all the time when he's got that great smell, and he laughs.

i love when there is surf, even though i don't anymore (i grew up surfing, but raising children got in the way, here is one of my last attempts), i love the energy in the air. the way all talk is of surf and wave size and wind and tide all those conditions needed for an epic session. in our town, even some businesses close up shop to go surfing.

or some even make a living thanks to the surf. here is a magazine Chuck edits. please click on it if you are interested in reading about more surfing or seeing some fantastic photos. and now i really have to go get some more current photos of my own. the waves are calling.

♥ lori

p.s. thank you times a thousand for your kind words and thoughts and congrats on my previous post, my appreciation runs deeper than the deepest of deep oceans.

  7. I love surfing too... No I don't do it myself, but it's all around me and a way of life if you live anywhere coastal in Australia.
    I like the culture.

    I have film cameras too... and I share a digital. I haven't mastered any of them, but I do enjoy taking photos.

    Have fun with the new toy... it sounds good. The photos here today look great :)

    Enjoy the beach... as you know I love the beach in winter time. It's exciting!

    xx love to you

  8. Dear sweet Lori -- first of all, I want to congratulate you on getting our photos published and winning those accolades. Much deserved. Secondly -- "listening to the sound of the waves ..." I am supremely jealous. That is my favourite lullaby. Lastly, is there anything you can't do??? Surfer chick! You are awesome!

    Coco,
    i use both. my husband shoots only film though. Many publications still prefer film over digital, the quality still can't be matched. for me there's good in both. thank you!

    Thank you Linda, I really appreciate that.

    thank you, it is fun.it's good to see you. i hope things are better at the smile household? thinking of you.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Oh wizz,
    some surfers refrain from such language! haha!
    Dear Ribbon,
    i did know that, a lot of people from here take trips to Australia for the surf. You have the world's largest surf culture i think next to Hawaii. Chucks been twice for contests, many years ago. It's a great, healthy sport i think.
    and i haven't even come close to mastering mine either, but it it fun trying!
    Lyn,
    maybe you can get one of those sound machines? and have waves breaking in your home too! they work great. thank you so much for all the kind words. :)
  10. Lori, you are an amazingly talented photographer. The two of you are quite a team. What is fascinating is the modesty you have, the sweet modesty that makes your talent so precious.
    Those are awesome pics.
  15. Oh so very cool! I wish I had the opportunity when I was younger to try surfing. This old body would never hold up today, but there was a time when I was agile but not brave. Now I am brave but stiff and sore! Also I have yet to visit California! One day though, one day!
  19. You are such a cool chick! The picture and post from 2008 was so neat. For all of us living far away from salt water, it is a joy to read posts and look at pictures of people surfing. Especially people we "know."
    Congrats, really, on the wonderful recognition. I can't think of a more deserving recipient.
  21. Many congratulations on your previous post! Its not blowing your own trumpet, you should post whatever you like! I just post the things I want to remember, that make me happy.
    Sounds like you've got an awesome printer!
  22. Me too ... I knew if I waited long enough I would be able to give you a proper 'Bravo.'
    Snow is gone from Bend now, but mountains surrounding us are covered. My youngest son (47) arrives from MN this Friday for a week of skiing.
    Can't wait!
  23. lori, do you have a canon pixma 4 in 1? if it's what i have, it's desktop-huge and worth every penny.
    surfing is another world to me. i've never surfed, i can't imagine my back or knee would ever take the risk, and i probably would be the world's biggest scardy cat.
    still, i have to tell you i just love thinking about you and the surf and sun around you. i can only imagine how you and chuck and your cameras experience the world.
    and speaking of surfing, what a shot you got of chuck riding that wave.
    you are totally awesome, lori!
    xoxoxoxo times five
  24. So you disable comments on your last post, eh? That's okay... I'll congratulate HERE! (Mwah hah hah).
    No, but seriously. Congrats, Lori. You deserve all the praise and recognition that your beautiful photographs get.
    Also, I'm terrified to surf but have wanted to do it for so long. What's the best way to get started for someone who is a bad swimmer and terrified of sharks? ;)
  25. Darling can you show us the winning picture again tomorrow. I want to see it all over again.
    Love you darling beautiful friend.
    Thank you Nancy,
    it's easy to forget how exciting surfing can be, i mean it's always been a part of my life and even though it's extraordinary, it's also very ordinary too. thank you for your lovely compliment.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    mandy, yes! i'm learning all about it.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Sammi, if only it were that easy. You dear girl are lucky to not worry that way. Do not be like me. ☺
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Helen,
    ha! have fun skiing with your son and thank you. :)
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Ah thanks kj,
    surfing isn't too scary, but it is alot easier for the kids.
    No, i bought an HP. I hope its a good one, it seems to be, it can do everything but take the photos! I hope my little pogo isn't jealous. ☺
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Tracy,
    surf around someone a lot tastier? (to lure the shark away) haha. you don't have to know how to swim that well for surfing, you will be paddling more. and you'll be going out at beach breaks so you can practically stand up and walk to your board. sharks live in the ocean though, there's no getting around that one. stay out of the food chain if you can, don't go in the water near sealions or seals, sharks love to eat them and they may think your one too. did i just turn you off for life? thank you darling for the funny kind no comment comment.

  27. Lori - duly noted. After your sound advice, I think perhaps I'll just watch Point Break a lot to get it out of my system. ;) And throw tuna on my surfing buddies!
