KNIT. HIKE. BIKE. SHOP. BIRD. PHOTO. REPEAT.

greetings!

hello! i hope you are well! lately around here...

~  i've been using my phone a lot for photos. i found an attachment for iphone, that might be good substitute sometimes for a camera. it's a 4-in-1 lens system, including a fish eye, wide angle, 10x macro and 15x macro. have you used anything like this? would you recommend it? here is the link olloclip.

~ spring has arrived to california's central coast, the weather has been extremely lovely. i've been hiking and bike riding, and beach walking and gardening. first roses bloomed this week.

~ my grandson is in santa barbara magazine! he and his friends (travis is the blonde on the left) and the skateboard park they frequent. favorite designer heidi merrick is on the cover and featured inside, oh this dress and this one. yay heidi and travis!

~  sparrows and house finches are dining at the 'window cafe' (our blue bird feeder) all day long! i'm pretty sure i saw an indigo bunting, hoping to see it again!  these are such tiny colorful birds, the finches a deep rosy red. sometimes 3 or 4 sit on a nearby fence waiting their turn.

~  chuck and i collaborated on an article, it came out last sunday in the los angeles times. we both had 2 photos, one of mine has yarn :) this was a first collaboration for us so very exciting, more to come... :)

~ i made a shawl, a gift for a dear friend, for her upcoming trip to greece and turkey. it's the shetland lace triangle in jade sapphire lace weight cashmere. it took just about 450 yards. the skeins are 400 yards apiece, so i've just enough left of the second to make a very sweet pattern. and the pom pom yarn is now knit up, that was a patience tester. i think it's going to be a pillow, maybe...oh! and i've been collecting wool for the last few months for a long term project. it's all here now and i can start!

~ and little by little making preparations for scotland and the shetland islands. flights and accommodations are booked. we ordered a new bag, it's called the 'black hole' ,a wheeled duffel that has more room than anything i've ever owned. chuck calls it the 'black hole for cramming in yarn'. yep.   :)

and from cape town, more africa here (this is the last article), thank you lara and tamlin!
have a good week dear friends!

  5. How fun to work on a project with your Chuck adding another stitch in your already tight bond, wonderful! And Travis has really grown, such a handsome young man.
I am still wanting on buntings to arrive here, we have Indigo and painted. We have discovered a squirrel now lives in one of the bluebird boxes. Owen looks so happy in the warm weather, it looks like he's smiling.
I love that you have a black hole case, perfect for the yarn lover you are!

  6. I'm glad that everything is so good for you Lori. What a lovely happy post. We have robins nesting in our hedge, I love to watch them as I was the dishes. Awesome about the article collaboration with Chuck. Oh and about your grandson too...he's a very handsome young man. Your garden looks amazing...oranges...wow...
    Thanks for sharing everything.

  7. That is a really serious bag! Wow, it certainly will hold a lot of yarn!
... and is that an orange tree in your yard? ... and you have roses in bloom? Now I am getting really envious, I've tried to have a small (and ridiculously expensive) orange tree in a pot in my greenhouse. It didn't enjoy Swedish conditions, so it is no more. And there are no roses yet in my garden - but I do have a lovely dog, just as Owen, in my garden, so all is not bad here in Sweden!

What a handsome grandson you have - and how nice about the article!

    1. thank you irene! yes! it is an orange tree. we have a very small yard, but somehow 3 large orange trees live in it producing a LOT of fruit. we live in an area where almost everything grows (i think). there are many dutch nurseries here, it is a good climate (mediterranean) for year round gardening!

What a beautiful shawl! I wonder if I will ever knit a lacy shawl, perhaps like 10 years from now… I love the stack of tweedy yarn too.

I put it on and wear it around the house just to feel its luxuriousness! It will go with me, well, EVERYWHERE, because here you never know when a cool breeze will blow in off the ocean. Just perfect for our trip to Greece and Turkey, including a cruise to the islands! Be safe and well and come visit our little paradise in this corner of the world sometime!

  29. Ahhh Lori, at last I have had the opportunity to take a long look at this fabulous post. i wanted to linger over each of those photographs, and over your well written words, too.

Travis is so handsome (shares your very fine looks) and he and his mates look like perfect California boys!

It's also grand to see the L.A. newspaper article by Chuck and you. I am sure that many more of these will follow. Anyone who has been reading your posts for a while will realize that you and he both have the gift...in combination that gift is even more amazing. When you all describe a place, I immediately want to travel there!

On to the Shetland lace shawl...how beautifully you have knit this and your choice of yarn is truly perfect for this luxurious creation. Bravo! I do like the idea of a Shetland traditional design traveling to Turkey!

As someone who has yet to be inducted into any smart phone possession or use, I am very intrigued by the app that you are going to be trying out. With your photographic expertise and wonderful eye, I would imagine that the app will be lots of fun for you to explore.

Thank you for the wheelie suitcase link. I remember way back when I used to travel to the UK often, during the favorable dollar-to-pound years, I would buy loads of yarn and actually have it shipped back to New York. It was still a marvelous bargain and yarn shopping was like being in a Wonderland.

I know I am forgetting to mention something, but...right now, while I am still in a time of relative leisure, I am going to hop over to have a long look at your prior Africa posting.
