i could barely take these photos for the tears in my eyes. i know i'm in love with knitting, and everyone who's a parent or grandparent knows the pride that comes with having children, but look at this little girl! she took to it in minutes, her concentration so deep she was hardly breathing. she remembered everything i told her, repeating a poem to help her with her hands and the wool... 'over the fence (put the needle in the front bar) catch the sheep (wrap the yarn) back we come (bring the needle and yarn to the front) and off we leap (new stitch is lifted to the right needle). she softly murmured these words while stitches began to form.
this is how i learned too as a small child, at my grandmothers knee (although i was on the floor with bella) at the foot of grandma rose's cozy blue chair (will she remember mine is green?), with gentle guidance and reassurance from her soft voice. and it's stayed with me my whole life. i hope with all my heart it is the same for sadie bella.
Oh Lori, you can be absolutely sure she will remember this day for the rest of her life! And she even has these marvellous pictures! Yes, she looks so concentrated, how lovely! I did not know this poem but will teach my little ones here, too! I like her painted fingernails, she is already a little woman. You are both lucky to have each other!
ReplyDeleteI have tears in my eyes. I remember my granny teaching me how to knit.
ReplyDeleteShe does it so neatly too!!!
Ohhhh Lori! How wonderful for you to share this precious moment! Bella is beautiful...so concentrated, patient, she is just a darling! I'm so glad she took to it! What joy for you. And to share this love will be a forever closeness♥
ReplyDeleteHow sweet and precious!!Always a thrill to see your little sweeties enjoying something that runs deep inside your heart.Big Hugs,Cat
ReplyDeleteSo lovely! I wish my kids had a grandma who would do what you have done!
ReplyDeleteOh how precious! There is nothing more moving than passing on your skills to a younger generation. Yay for Bella! (sweet name too :)) And how nice it is too that you have reminded us to remember those lovely memories. xo
ReplyDeleteI have a little theory. I think likes, desires and talent skip a generation like a hybrid seed. I know it's true with me and so many people I've discussed this with.
ReplyDeleteI have no doubt you have a very good knitter in your company and oh I love her nail polish, one hand only :)
She's adorable!!
that is so sweet lori! ezra always says he wants to knit, but i know he isn't ready yet. hopefully he'll take to it as quickly as sadie bella one day. i love the look of concentration on her face.
ReplyDeleteoh, her concentration. Her pride and JOY!
ReplyDeleteYOUR pride and joy!
Does it get any better than this?
I don't think so.
And yes, she'll remember the color of your chair and how you sat with her on the floor, knitting....together.♥
xoxo
Lo♥
I remember MY grandma teaching me how to knit - I remember she was wearing a dress - (she didn't wear pants until she was in her late 60's or 70's) and her patience in teaching me her odd continental way of knitting. I knit a few dolls clothes, then gave it up for years. Then more knitting and then gave it up for years again...and now more. And there isn't one time that I don't think of Grandma every time I pick up those needles (which I mostly got from her). You've given your little granddaughter such a precious gift and there are so many facet's to that gift. you'll both always remember this day. (and she is way adorable looking)
ReplyDeleteYeah! My baby is so perfect and you're such a good grammy!!! Love, love, love!
ReplyDeletewhat an incredibly sweet, sweet day. These are the ones that make all of it worthwhile, thank you for sharing it here!
ReplyDeletei don't need to say anything. i know you know i know....
ReplyDelete(but of course i still talk when i don't need to :^) : the second to last shot of sadie bella is award winning. i'm sure a magazine wants it. (business agents never cease, do they?!)
my heart is happy for your heart (that's what i said i didn't need to say)
♥

How sweet. I learned to knit with my grandmother. I never knew it might have meant so much to her until I read your post. I'm so glad my grandma and I were able to spend that time together.
ReplyDeleteLori, it's a new era for you, passing along that which you love to one you hold so dear. I hope that I too will have the privilege of being a grandma and I hope I can be as cool as you!
ReplyDeletethat is so beautiful - a rite of passage and a link connecting you all like the stiches that you knit - history woven in the yarn. made me teary too xx

She is so beautiful and deeply into it. I too love children and love how they take to things without the inhibitions we grown-ups (poor us) have.
ReplyDeleteLovely!
Sending a picnic basket of Fourth of July wishes to you and yours.

hi lori, i havent been here for a long time xx
ReplyDeleteHi Lori--nice to meet you, too!
ReplyDeleteI will need to remember that sweet little poem when it comes time to teach my 3-year-old to knit! Thanks for sharing, and thanks for commenting on my blog. It's always fun to hear from new readers. By the way, I was born in Santa Barbara, so I like to say I'm really a Californian. hahhah. Also love meeting a fellow knitter, I'm on Ravelry as EmmyB, if you are there, too.
Beautiful pictures. . . .
I found a great deal of effective data in this post!
