knit ombre

hello from ny! we are home now, but photos are from last weekend in brooklyn. chuck and i made an impromptu trip to nyc to pay a visit to two of our children that live there (in brooklyn). i was so excited i forgot about choosing a travel knit project to bring. (i know!) currently there is a fair isle cardigan on the needles here, but carrying eight or nine balls of wool on a trip, oh dear, no

the day before we left, last wednesday, i hurried over to our local yarn store to find something that would be suitable for travel. lightweight is good, simple pattern, or no pattern (better!) would be good also if it fit in a small project bag, and last the length of time while away. oh dear oh dear. then i remembered. a pattern (non pattern) seen and saved. a cowl that took three very small practically weightless balls of rowan kidsilk haze, the ombre cowl hood

it is the perfect travel knit! a very simple stockinette-in-the-round pattern. yarn is held double throughout, and colors are alternated to create ombre stripes (rowan makes over thirty shades to choose from)

early morning at a coffee shop on bedford, knitting and people watching

this knit up so quickly i wished i'd had six balls for two cowls. one to hurry and knit to wear, it was COLD in ny (there was snow!) and one to have on the needles. holding two strands of kid silk at once and using a size eight needle, made this a very favorite travel knit. and so cozy warm to wear.

  5. Hello Lori,

Forgive me for becoming a little emotional here but: FRANCES! Dear sweet, lovely Frances who leaves such thoughtful comments on our blogs. It's great to see her here looking pretty stunning too :-)

Speaking of stunning, Lori you look fabulous too. I love the way you just find colour in your surroundings to harmonize your knits. That makes me happy! Whilst admiring your cowl I was thinking to myself how great it was to see you wearing it in N.Y. City but how did you keep your knitter's hands happy for the rest of the trip?

It's great to see you Lori looking radiant as ever.

    1. dear stephanie, frances is even more lovely in person, the photos can not show how sweet she is, her delightful voice and personality. i hope you will have a chance to meet her someday. i felt really lucky!

i tried to make the cowl last, but the weather was COLD and it knit too quickly. i was without a project for 2 days, but with the kids there wasn't much time for knitting. that is what i told myself anyway ;)

  10. Gorgeous cowl!! And look at you meeting virtual friends in real life. You have a lovely family and I adore the table cloth that the cowl is laying on, is it vintage? Or did you make that?

    1. both tablecloths are vintage, i have a weakness for collecting them. in the middle of photographing the cowl i took off the wintery one and replaced it with a spring like one! there are two in the photos :)

  15. Your daughter looks just like you! :) The cowl is lovely. I like taking simple projects long wherever I go. I made so many things for the little girls we were with in Sri Lanka but forgot to take pictures of them all. How lovely that you got away to NYC to visit your daughter and to meet up with a blog friend. That's always fun.

As for the cookies, I have a gas oven and never know what I am baking anything at. I imagine 350 would be good for maybe 12-15 minutes. Depends on your oven. I can usually smell when things are done. Just bake them until they are set and golden on the bottom. Really are very tasty and healthy. I finished up the last 3 today and plan to make more, trying different additions.

    Have a great day. Tammy

  17. Lori, it's grand to see this post and be reminded of what a joy it was to actually meet you and your family!

I also want to compliment you on that lovely colorful cloud of a cowl. I've always loved that particular Rowan yarn, usually combining it, as a double strand, with something tweedy for extra strength. Now I see how pretty it can be on its own. How did those street painters know which yarn colors you'd chosen? Kismet?

And was I there? No? I can't think of a reason not to be there.

And what about wee olive? Was she there? Did she eat breakfast?

And Bryant park? Central Park? And fab places in brooklyn i don't know about? how many restaurants?

    And chuck and the kids.

I was there, actually. Sort of.

I hope blogger doens't eat this comment, if it does, I'll know it is evil
