desert made

many thanks dear kind people, for all the congratulations. thank you from my boy too. you are the nicest people in the world.  :)

 arizona state university colors?

i think so!

the delicious cream tunis wool is my lucky find from arizona. dory the sheep, who made this fiber is from queen creek, thank you the farm at the end of the road!  spinning is done in prescott at arizona fiber mill. it's lovely, finding something so beautiful and locally made, i have just the thing in mind for it!

the 'sunny days shawlette' pattern is from nurturing fibres. it was a comforting knit, rows of stockinette stitch, the kind you don't think about, until...the long drive home from arizona and the chevron edging and i couldn't for the life of me memorize it, at the same time, my ipad was rapidly losing power, and i wasn't sure where the car charger was (my printer is out of ink, no paper pattern!) i could have stopped knitting and taken the time to write down the directions for the last seven rows, but instead i continued in a fine frenzy ('what i wouldn't do', love her music ;) trying to finish, while trying not to look at the numbers, dropping dropping dropping, ten percent, six, three...at one percent (ha!) i finished. sometimes my friend andee calls herself a dork (she's not). but i think this may be the dorkiest thing of all.
hee hee.
i added the graduation photo to demonstrate how the shawl looks to be in arizona state university colors! completely unintentional! the main color is from curious creek fibers, called omo in the spice market colorway. a blend of silk and merino, it's SO soft. the contrast is madeline tosh in alabaster.

sunny days shawlette ravelry link here.
my notes here
still reading lillian beckwith books, they are so charming and so so good.
joining with ginny and the yarn along here.

and
working on improving my memory here   ;)

  3. Oh I love my knitting dork moments. I love your drive to get it done! Imagine patterns self destructed like the notes in Inspector Gadget. I'd definitely knit much faster than I do already. I love your shawl the colors are fantastic. I will have to keep that in mind when my boys make it to college. Picking a school by it's colors for hand knits will be a must.

  6. Goodness, it's so beautiful. I have this shawl queued up too, and looking for some great yarn. You always choose the most gorgeous colors.

I'm starting with Lillian Beckwith now, too, on your recommendation, and I totally agree with you--they're just right. :)

  7. I love the story of that yarn! How great! It makes me want to dig into the local wool I have. Grown, washed, and spun in Florida! Or at least, it will be.. once I finish washing it and get around to spinng it up. (:

(lesson learned: never leave home without your knitting AND charger!!! thanks for sharing that little tidbit!!!!) 22. Your shawlette looks great, how wonderful that the colors are like your son's university. I was intending mine to be a gift for an 8 yr old, but now I've seen yours finished, I think that it may end up being too big.
Looking forward to seeing what you make with 'Dory's' yarn.

  24. That shawl is gorgeous, I love the edging on it especially...I'm off to add that pattern to my Ravelry favourites. And I love the story behind that yarn, yarn with a story is my most favourite kind of yarn. Julie :)

  25. you are fast! car travel is a great way to finish up projects though. it came out beautifully! i love it. arizona state colors and all. the yarn you picked up is making me want white yarn! perhaps because i'm moving to the desert and my new favorite clothing color is white. loved these pictures of you in your new creation.

  26. Lori, there is so much to love in this post.

The ASU colors of your shawl have a wonderful harmony, and the mix of yarns serves the style so well, too. Your pretty grey dress looks perfect with the colorful colorway. I did have a peek at the pattern, and will add it to my extremely long list of possible projects. (I am embarrassed to admit that I have yet to cast on stitches using that gorgeous yarn I won in your giveaway...still conjuring up the design for the intended hat.)

The sock yarn also looks so tempting. I will also look into author Lillian Beckwith.

Thank you for all sorts of inspiration. xo
