this is the rachel bag. soon as i saw the pattern on ravelry, designed by handy kitty in sweden, i was pedaling my bike to the quilt/yarn shop in town, hoping to find the cotton yarn needed to make it. it is so sweet! i followed kitty's very good directions, a little knitting a little crocheting a little sewing. except for the lining, a phone pocket was added, and for the strap, a knitted icord instead of a crocheted one *happy* i really like this one. and my daughters did too, as soon as i sent them a photo of the completed bag, they instantly replied, make me one too please?!
pattern: rachel bag
yarn : cotton classic tahki stacy charles, inc. color 3003
needles : us 6 (4mm) double points x 5
crochet hook : us g (4mm)
and (if you were wondering) bamboo cell phone case here
a sweet book i loved reading, the summer book by tove jansson, i've shared it before, but it's beautiful and charming... "in the summer book tove jansson distills the essence of the summer it's sunlight and storms - into twenty two crystalline vignettes"

he's returned! my adventuring husband. with exciting stories and a beard, and wearing his sweater!
tomorrow we are back out to the islands, he for work, me to tag along.
this time i'll bring a camera, hiking poles, a book
and my new knit camping container...
to help keep my yarn clean (camping = lots of dirt)
there is one for small leaves, for fingerless mitts, a hat, slippers
inside holds just enough wool and needles to make any of these, well, two things and a few leaves...
i think i'm going to make another to leave in my truck, a break open in case of (knitting) emergency kit!
edited to add (thank you willfulmina!) there is a tiny pair of snips, tapestry needle, measuring tape on the bottom, all the little things we need! see you soon dear friends xxxxx lori
sharing with ginny and yarn along
so creative! love the homemade yarn keeper and that bag is fantastic!
ReplyDeletewelcome home, traveller ~ have fun in the islands you two :)
Melissa
That container is pure genius! I want to make one for the car too. Mine will have an emergency pair of socks, plus all the little things you wish you had on a long drive--tape measure, darning needle, scissors, stitch markers, etc. the possibilities are endless!
ReplyDeleteI just love your blog. I love the little bag so much!
ReplyDeleteCan I tell you how envious I am of you. Can I be you for just one day? Please! Oh those pocket book slippers. One of my all time favorite patterns. Do you think my Quill will fit in an empty oatmeal container for my camping trip. No. I didn't think so. Maybe more like an empty box of K-cups from Costco. But you did get me thinking. Dirt and prime alpaca just won't mix. Good thing my Camping Shawl will fit in my yarn along bag. I'm glad to hear your husband has returned. I hope we get to see some pictures and hear stories soon.
ReplyDeleteThat little bag is so cute and I just love your emergency sewing kits. What a great idea!
ReplyDeleteaaah! i love everything you do! this is so great. break open in case of emergency. i think you should sell those in your shop lori ann graham! me and the boys are heading north in august. would love to see you. xox

I'm loving the bag, so beautifully done as always. I'm guessing you've started a trend ... just as soon as my shoulder's fixed I'm knitting me one, and I'm sure I won't be alone! The DIY knitting keeper is a brilliant idea.
ReplyDeleteHave a great trip :)
Oooh that bag is lovely :)
ReplyDeleteHope you are keeping well Lori Xxxx
Tove's writing, a multipurpose upcycled oatmeal box and camping with your sweetheart. How PERFECT! Happy summer Lori!
ReplyDeleteYou have such beautiful posts and pictures! I really love that bag, I've already added it to my queue!
ReplyDeleteoh clever clever you! Love the idea of having a knitting can-not that I go camping and get dirty but I could pretend to be camping. Your knitted bag is beautiful, love the medallion knitting and of course lining makes a knitted bag have structure and a visual present every time you look inside :)
ReplyDeleteOoh, so pretty! I can see why your daughters want one too! And I love your camping knitting box - so creative!
ReplyDeleteOh that bag is so cute, no wonder your girls want one each. Clever idea for camping friendly knitting! Have a lovely time on your islands.
ReplyDeleteLori, I'd seen that market bag design somewhere recently (could have been ravelry...summer heat is cooking my memory) and I really like your adaptations. The lining is a wonderful idea and the i-cord strap, too! I do love the tahki cotton yarn and have used it so many times.
ReplyDeleteThe Toasty mitts are another fave of mine. Can you imagine I'm also knitting wooly mitts in hot July. I've made many pair and am trying out another variation with 6 sts/inch.
Welcome back Chuck! Have lots of fun on your island journey. The recycled knit project container is brilliant. Say hello to the little foxes! xo
I love the bag! Can't blame your girls for wanting one as well. :-) Very creative way to store your yarn! I'll have to remember that.
ReplyDeletegorgeous bag, Lori. It reminds me of an antique bed cover my grandma had, timeless.
ReplyDeletethe islands! Will you look for whales? I've been scanning every day

Very pretty and so neatly done. I can't wait to get out my needles again and knit for my little babes.
ReplyDeleteThe bag is really lovely, and I quite understand your daughters' reaction, who wouldn't want a bag like this one? I will have to check the pattern out (although I do have several projects on the go, and never seem to be able to finish one any of them).
ReplyDeleteThe knit container is pure genius!! What a clever idea.
... and I do hope that you will have a lovely time on your island, you and your husband!

Dear Lori,
ReplyDeleteI marvelled at those pieces in your last post and first thought it was the Vivid blanket (which I can't wait to start with), but this bag is so sweet!
You've been busy and creative! Enjoy summer, enjoy the creativity! :-)
ReplyDeleteOh what a sweet bag! it will be nice to have your man back - have a lovely trip and look forward to seeing the photos xxx
ReplyDeleteWhat a great bag. I added it to my list. I think my daughter will love it too. Although she is only 8, she can appreciate a cute bag. And what an ingenious storage method. Have a wonder-filled time with your husband enjoying such a beautiful location.
ReplyDeleteSuch a brilliant, yet simple (!!) idea. Love it. :) I've knit the pocketbook slipper pattern before and am thankful for the reminder...with fall just around the corner, they'd be a perfect knit. Thanks! ~Lisa
ReplyDeleteWhat a darling bag!! So surreal to be reading a summer knitting post while I huddle by the heater knitting!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful bag. I like the idea of adding a little pocket, I always need one of those. Great idea with the oatmeal box too, especially writing the patterns on the box. I need to remember that.
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful bag, and stunning pictures. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThe oatmeal tub idea is fabulous!
thank you so much everyone, for such lovely kind words. i appreciate them SO much!
ReplyDeleteSomehow I missed this lovely post! Your little bag is really beautiful.....and perfect styled with that lovely dress too. I think the idea of the oatmeal tub filled with crafty goodness and with the little patterns written on the outside is so delightful! Very lovely photos too, Lori......wishing you lots more happy crafty times and inspiring travels this summer.

What a pleasent suprise! I thought only Finns and Swedish read Tove Jansson, but was delighted to notice. there are someone so far away who likes her books, too. Rachel bag goes to my ToDo list at once =)
ReplyDeleteHey Lori, I am visiting from Andi's KAL - you were kind enough to visit my blog. Firstly, wow! this is such a beautiful place. Secondly, I had admired your white lace bag on Andi's KAL on the finished projects thread but I had not realised that it belonged to my lovely visitor. I was thrilled to see it here. Thirdly, just before visiting you, I ordered The Summer Book for my sister-in-law for her birthday. It is such a great book, spare and pure prose but with a sweet, profound lyricism at its core. There is some knitterly synchronicity going on here!
ReplyDeleteWhat a clever idea...and that bag is gorgeous. I love the summer book too the descriptions of the island and the coast just make you want to be there.
ReplyDeletePs love your dress too...
ReplyDeletedebx
The bag is SO pretty! (And the fabric lining, too!)
ReplyDeleteyou are adorable. and so are all the things you do.
ReplyDeleteXO
Lori, I'm so glad to have found your blog! It's beautiful!!!
ReplyDeleteThis bag is so perfect. I want to make one now. :)
The camping yarn keeper is brilliant--I should make one for the beach/hiking etc--so great with the knitting recipes on the outside. Love it. (of course the bag is beautiful, too)
ReplyDeleteLori - what a stunning idea for the empty oatmeal container with the couple of patterns written on the outside. It was amazed when reading your latest blog post because your pocketbook slippers (never heard them called that) are EXACTLY what my mom used to knit. She passed away last year and I've been trying to figure out how many stitches to cast on, increase to etc for different sizes.
ReplyDeleteI still have a pair that she knit for me (but they're now really threadbare). She worked up to 50 stitches and then proceeded to the k2, p2 rib . . . I'm trying to knit a pair for my grandchild but am not sure about how to make them smaller.
Do you have the written pattern that you could send to me?
My e-mail address is : play2learn@mweb.co.za
Many thanks - I love reading your blog.
Isabel
Lori, this is the most exquisite little bag. I love every detail of it and will bookmark it. Everything you make is just perfection and full of love. Your camping tin is also a very cool idea and something I could definitely use x
