i took a class in wool felt embroidery, and made an owl pincushion. next week we are making a bluebird cushion and a needlebook, i have homework, a lot of little pieces need to be cut out. my friend karen gave me fiskar scissors today, they should make the job much easier.
a letter arrived from africa, maxwell wrote to tell news of his family and village. we met four years ago when chuck and i were in zimbabwe, and visited his small fishing village. finding mail from maxwell makes me jump up and down with excitement. i love this small world feeling. i hope when he and his family receive packages from me they feel the same :)
last night we saw the AVETT BROTHERS!!! they were here in santa barbara. oh my goodness gracious, i LOVE these boys. i took chuck on a date! i think it's the first time that's ever happened, i think he enjoyed himself as much as i did. that would be A LOT! we were at the stage again (like sigur ros in april). where we stood for three hours, singing, dancing and generally merrymaking with the crowd and band. come back soon avetts! i LOVE you!
Seth and Scott Avett aren't content to merely play gorgeous roots music; to just lay some lovely harmonies over banjos and strings. Performing as The Avett Brothers — with bassist Bob Crawford, cellist Joe Kwon and others — they craft alternately stompy and swoony music that's rooted in a desire for self-improvement. Take their body of work as a whole, and it forms the outlines of a makeshift guide to life, and to being fundamentally decent in the pursuit of something even better.
listen to the avett's newest lp, magpie and the dandelion, due out next week, streaming for free right now on npr radio here.
and this morning, bright and early, it was time to show up for my vip job of 'sand crab monitoring chaperone'. hee hee. my granddaughter sadie's class was walking to the beach to make a study of sand crabs and in effect, the health of our oceans. i think it was a smashing success! a very happy thanksgiving to our canadian neighbors and very happy weekend to you!

Such a sweet and positive post Lori! It seems to have been a lovely week! Your granddaughter looks so much like you, I bet she has your temper as well! Beeing ill for the last two weeks has kept me inside most of the time as fall has arrived here but today on the first day of sunshine I took my husband on a date myself:) To Pure Living an american inspired cafe with chees cakes and bagels and many other good things! Have a sunny weekend!
ReplyDeleteSeriously...an avocado festival? That would be dreamy...I have a major crush on guacamole! Around here it's all apple and pumpkin festivals this time of year. And the Avett Brothers...my all-time favourite band, sounds like a great week!

ReplyDeleteI love your pin cushion! I love all you do. xoxo
ReplyDeleteCutest little owlie - love him! And gotta say I'm soooo jealous of you for getting to see those Avett boys -- Sigur Ros too -- both so good! But I can't think of anyone who deserves an evening of fun & merriment & dancing & good music more than you Sweet Lori. Sending prayers of love & angels to you & your family & your brave grandson Travis.

That little owl is utterly gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteWhat fun your felty class! Love a craft class myself, I do! And the hand dyed colours are lovely.
ReplyDeleteI have a question, lori: do you know why the cellist in the Avett Bros plays the cello hanging from his shoulder, it is bewildering me!
