in a nutshell

helloo and oh dear. i hope all is well with you!  i've been very neglectful of this space. i'm dreaming of a week at home, no work, or travel...just quietly staying home and catching up on the big and little things. that is unlikely to happen before october (today is already the first day of fall!) a bit of life here lately then, in a nutshell (all photos taken with iphone)...

knitting for babies! i found this pattern for a soaker in a vintage book. i love making them!

'go to work with your husband day' every chance i get! the weather is perfect this time of year! we are at channel islands national park.

my best friend and i went to the california central coast yarn crawl. it was a two day event so we stayed in a hotel saturday night. her sweet husband packed us a picnic dinner.

in the hotel we ate delicious tapas, drank delicious wine and knit socks! (and took photos of them on the way home) ;)

the next day i flew to nyc with a friend

we met my girl at grand central station

jumped on a train to connecticut...

rented a car in new haven and drove north to...

portland maine! met friends carrie bostick hoge, maryjane mucklestone, gudrun johnston. carrie, gudrun and i also had our girls, immie and maya and hannah (taking the photo, darn!)

there was a photo shoot on the maine coast

foxy was left in good hands, and we headed back south to nyc...

where in a small square in tribeca a few things happened... saw my darling son and son in law at their work, and across the street, my girl and i had an appointment in a shop...

for her wedding dress. (this is not it if you are reading matt.)  :)   there was just enough time to see 'the dress' (tears. oh my.) before i had to catch a cab back to jfk.

back at home, souvenirs from maine. carrie's book is gold. taproot is too. found seaglass on a maine beach. the daisy a gift from my future son in law. :)

then the phone call came. i won the grand prize from the central coast yarn crawl. EEP!!

oh. my. gosh. this basket, filled to the brim. THANK YOU central coast yarn crawl and all sponsors: lantern moon, addi, rowan, plymouth, berroco, classic elite, never not knitting, knitbot, misti alpaca, zealana, frog tree, jojoland, swans island, anzula, manos del uruguay, mountain colors, lothlorian made in new zealand gloves and leisure arts ~ encyclopedia of needlework.

not taken with a cell phone...

engagement photos in the city. hannah rose + matt, love, mom

    2. OMG that is soooo tempting! You have no idea how much I would love to join you. I don't think this fall would be possible though... there is so much going on at work right now, and I don't have any vacation time left (and no "fun" money left either). But I am determined to plan a trip to visit you dearest Lori. Hopefully in the not too distant future.

  13. Your life seems a bit like mine at the moment Lori, rushing from one thing to the other, not really having time to "get things done", well I do not mind the trip I am getting on to tomorrow, I am going to PARIS! A little work and a little vacation, can´t wait! I haven´t really find any yarn stores though, even though I have searched the Internet! We´ll see, maybe I will find something spontaneously:) Your girl and her fiancée, they look so sweet! It must be such an adventure, to see your children getting married. Are they diaper pants? The win, my gosh, you are a lucky girl!! Congratulations!! Take care!

    1. hello karin-ida! i have a yarn shop for you! it's found here:

One of Paris’ hidden treasures, The Butte aux Cailles neighborhood is a hilly area in Paris’ 13th arrondissement, nestled in between the city’s biggest Chinatown district at Metro Tolbiac and the busy Place d’Italie. With its narrow cobblestone streets featuring quirky restaurants, cafes and boutiques La Butte is a village-like oasis in Paris’ otherwise ultracontemporary 13th arrondissement. With its art deco architectural heritage, and its laid back Paris ambiance, The Butte aux Cailles is definitely a place to come if you’re looking for something beyond the touristic attractions that the City of Light has to offer.

go to http://www.loisivethe.com/contactez-nous for directions (i follow on instagram and they are delightful!!)

  21. Great fun to see this post, Lori.

Can you believe that I had to go to Mr Google to find out what a soaker was/is? And now I know!

Yes, you've definitely been quite the traveler ... and each part of each road allowed you to find friends, family, love and inspiration. Seems quite a wonderful combination to me.

I am looking forward to seeing the results of that Portland, Maine photo shoot, and am imagining the wonderful knits that might have been part of it all, along with some lovely ladies.

You certainly had a whirlwind time to and from JFK. Hannah and Matt do glow with happiness!

Of course, I could type another bunch of paragraphs, but will just end this comment with huge congrats to you on winning that fabulous yarn basket. Wow! There could not have been a more wonderful winner.

    1. oh oops frances! sorry i wasn't more clear. soakers go by many different names, but basically its just a diaper (nappy) cover made of wool. i made a couple for carries new baby and am making for my baby too. this vintage pattern is really fun! and they are so useful!

oh my gosh the knits in carries new collection. EVERY SINGLE ONE. can't wait for the book.

i almost called you in the city, but was literally just there a couple hours, and only in that one small square in tribeca. next time ;)

thank you for such beautiful words about traveling, i love them and think maybe that is why i am not just exhausted from the physical journey, but from the emotional (wonderful) end too.
