a day to remember

morning:

we went for a run on the beach and found the most amazing thing. the super high and low tide that's been occurring lately dropped several piles of pebbles along the shore. and they were littered with sea glass! we collected until our pockets could hold no more and then we ran cradling our treasure all the way home.

afternoon:

we went for a hike in the front country, in the mountains here that face the sea. chuck had gone the day before and wanted to show me something. i knew i was in for a workout when he said "take your poles" (leki trekking poles, good for steep trails). there was a wildflower we hadn't seen before, it was covering the hillside. it was gorgeous. and the best part, it was covering the burn area, where there had been a devastating wildfire last summer. we saw bees humming, and butterflies fluttering, we saw ladybugs mating and gnats annoying (what do they do besides that?) and we said isn't it wonderful??

and then he took me to dinner because i was pooped. :)

  2. Talk about a perfect day! I loved that the burn area has come alive.

    I love, love, love your sea glass! I bought a sweet necklace and earrings in Hawaii of sea glass and then went online to read about it. All the colors depict certain eras. Wow, what a find! I'm now crazy for sea glass. :-)

  8. What a lovely day by the sound of it, although I'd pass on the run first thing.Dog walking an Alsation does it for me.
    And doesn't that sea glass look lovely. Can't wait to get to a beach in a few weeks and start looking for some more.
    And aren't poles fantastic things, I've only got one and that helps but know I will really apprectiate getting another one for those big up hill walks.

  10. sounds like a delightful day. That is something my hubby would do also, sort of hint that our exercise would be tough by getting me my poles.

    I think we all love seaglass. The colors, the softness, the beauty. Glad you got what you could at the time

  14. Stunning! STUNNING!! Those photos - I feel like I was right there. The empty beach and the gorgeous wildflower. You two just sound like you enjoy life to the fullest - an inspiration!!

    Loved the previous post with the picture of the rattle snake! I'm always on the lookout for snakes - I think they are just beautiful... In our garden, so far, we've only found harmless ones. But once while I was walking here, I saw the most gorgeous copperhead!

    Wishing you a most beautiful weekend! Much love to you! Silke

  15. Hi Lori

    every time I open your blog I could swear that you are waving at me from the top of that mighty sand dune...

    what a day...the sea glass was washed up in large amounts after the hurricane on Kauai, there used to be special beaches to go and collect from but I think they have been depleted now. I love the colours of the sea in the glass.

    Happy days

  16. Sounds utterly glorious! I'm envious of all of that beach glass. I think my next vacation has to be to the ocean!

  19. Lori, what a perfect day! This is one of the msny glorious things about life in CA..... you can go from the beach to the mountains in a few hours and have two very different adventures!

    The sea glass is so lovely.... I always heard of it as "Mermaid's Tears".... alas, they don't shed too many tears in San Francisco waters....

    The hike - and the discovery of a new flower..... such joy!

    And, dinner with your husband.....a perfect conclusion to a perfect day!

    Hugs,

    ♥ Robin ♥

  20. wonderful post. Was that wildflower blue? It looks a little like Viper's Bugloss, very hairy stem and pale blue flowers, reseeds a bit like borage does.
    wonderful flower find.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Your man is definitely a keeper! But I don't have to tell you that! ;-)
    I love all the photos, can't get enough of the wildflowers and your beach - it looks so much warmer then ours this time of the year!
    We live on the east coast of sweden, on the baltic sea, so it doesn't get really hot here, ever. It stays rather cold all year around.

  22. I love sea glass, never really coming across it when I lived in Minnesota. I'd love to do something really special with my little hoard when it gets more sizeable. Any ideas? I find a lot here on the east coast of Ireland.

    I'd love to know the name of the wild flower. It looks a bit sweet pea-ish?

  23. Hey, Lori, more great photos. You ARE good, but I'm still keeping the last desktop that I got from you.

  27. helen,
    thank you very very much! and i agree, seaglass is so endearing it has spawned hundreds of websites, magazines, clubs and even festivals!

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    robin,
    it's so true! it's one of the many things we are so grateful for. where we are we can be to these two places in minutes. maybe you can find the glass where there is surf, i think there is one beach in S.F. not sure though! good luck.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Hi Julie,
    we spent yesterday morning trying to id the flower, and found some errors in a local book (thank goodness for the internet!). The first one is Phacelia Grandiflora, Giant Flowered Phacelia. The second is Caterpilla Phacelia. It does look a big like Viper's Bugloss, but the flower is much larger. Thanks so much!

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    hbfg,
    thank you so much! do you get many wildflowers there then, they may like the cooler weather? thank you for the kind words.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    aden,
    i found so many ideas on line, just google seaglass craft. i would love to see your seaglass, would you like to do a swap? oh, the flower is called Giant Flowered Phaecelia.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Snowbrush,
    i'm delighted to know that! thank you so much for such kind words.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Inge,
    thank you, i do feel we were really lucky, we have never seen seaglass there before!

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    janet, hey your right! it does look kind of like a seahorse. the name of the plant is called Caterpillar Phaecelia. But now i'm going to think of it as the Seahorse Flower.
  28. Ooh, that sea glass! Gorgeous. Next time, be sure to run in cargo pants. And that photo with the sunrays -- just heavenly.
    Lori, hearing how you and Chuck share the same passions, and how he can't wait to show you something that he saw warms my heart to the very core. That is love. Hope you are having a splendid weekend. xoxo
  29. I just giggled out loud how you turned the word "annoying" into a verb - true, that's what gnats do best though!
    Lori, you just described to me the most perfect day in the world! And your photos, as usual, are gorgeous!
    ReplyDelete
  30. bella, that is hilarious, but a great idea! i am forever having to race back home and grab my bike or car to pick up something i've found, driftwood, a rock...
    thank you so much for your sweet words, i am lucky and really know it.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    sammi,

  33. Fantastic. Super high and low tides - is that because of the full moon? Wait, you wrote this before the full moon. Hmmm.

    Love finding wildflowers in the burn area. Every part of the life cycle, including death, plays a role in life.
