yarn gracing

wishing for another pi shawl to be on the needles, i have been looking at patterns and making swatches. what to do with a circular swatch? cover rocks, i liked them as bookends!   :)   i left one of these swatched rocks this morning, back where i found it, near a path next to the shore. wouldn't it be fun to find? the other is destined for a faraway friend, a bit of california to share. i'm reading an eighty two year old copy of walden and still enjoying 'safari' by tony park, keeping that feeling close to my heart. joining with ginny and the yarnalongers here

p.s. if you'd like to enter a giveaway for a small photo book of africa i've made (pockets!), click here, i'll choose a name this sunday, july 1st

update:   i returned this morning and found the rock gone  :)
thank you for your interest in the patterns i knit, i would love to share, but i'm not sure that's allowed.
the alabaster wool rock was made using the pi shawl formula from this book by elizabeth zimmerman, and the gossamer one was from this pattern by jared flood.

  3. Oh that is a fun thing to do with your swatches. You are too creative and what a fun idea to think one will be at one shore and the pair will be off to a far away place. I wonder if they will ever meet up again?

  4. Well, now you have me Lori! I have seen crocheted covered rocks and since I don't crochet I just thought I couldn't have one. I also really dislike swatching so usually don't, just knit on a prayer, but if this is what I can end up with I will be the most swatcheting [is that a word?] woman you have ever seen!
Would you love to see the face of the person who finds your gift? So precious I'm sure.
Much love to you my dear.

  5. I have a friend who does these in crochet, but knitted...now that's remarkable! Beautiful bookends, but then, just setting together is an "awe" moment too:-)

  11. Maybe you should leave your address there, like with a message in a bottle. I would love to meet that person who left me such a gift on the beach!
July 1 is Paco`s 12th birthday (and Sidney`s 13th), a good date to make someone happy.
I have begun with the sleeves now, I hope my little jacket will one day be finished! Without you, I had never dared to knit at all!
Much love from a rather cool island. Nothing compared to your desert temps!!

  13. I love that you left one with that quote. We are hoping to visit Walden while we are on this side of the US. Love that the swatches didn't go "to waste."

  15. Oh, Lori, what a wonderful and fun idea. I don't which is better...bookends for all those favorite books or sharing a little surprise with someone on their morning walk. Can you imagine the expression on their face? Probably a gamut of expressions. Priceless.

  16. Spreading random joy....I never realized what fun that could be until I left little knit owls all over Squam Lake. I would hear squeals of delight as folks found them----and I think the most fun was doing this anonymously!! Just recently, I "found" that shell with the message written on it---and got the same thrill. Yours, though, is a very very classy yarn bombing! My resolution this year was to branch out with my knitting---and I've never made a pi shawl. Maybe I need to put that on the dream list......the one you made awhile ago is still one of the most gorgeous knits I've ever seen!

  19. Dear Lori - we have always lived inland; I remember very well one summer that we spent at Jeffrey's Bay and my mother collecting every round stone she saw. The old '68 Mercedes' back end almost scraped the road when we drove back; my dad kept on warning her - now this is the last one! How incredible it would be for someone to find that rock, covered in that amazing yarn!
(I bet your town is small enough, and your kindness so well known, that you will be found out!)

  31. Dear Lori,
I found your blogg acouple of weeks ago because of a link regarding your small Namibiabags.
Now I have made a couple of them for the children leaving my kindergarden here at the swedish school of Vienna.
I put a little angel in the bag for protection when they leave us for the new, big world outside. Some of them leave to go back to their homecountries, this year it was Denmark and Sweden some go on to more exotic places like Brasil and one girl left us to start school next year. Anyway, this is the link to some pics. of my bags. Thank you for the idea and for the pattern!

  35. Such beautiful covered rocks Lori - how I wish I could have been the one to find one but what a dilemma it would be: leave for others to enjoy or claim for your own? I love to visit your blog, your images are so captivating and inspire me to try harder with my own but somehow I feel I lack the level of talent you have and possibly the equipment.... Thank you also for visiting my blog from my Yarn Along link. It's not the first time you have done so and each time I feel so honoured and grateful for your visit and your kind and encouraging comments.
