i have something to tell you

will this baby be next?

dear friends, have you had a passion for something, someplace, you felt a need to protect and preserve? it is africa for me. and this is why i'm sharing the above video. chuck and i are soon to leave (in may) on a safari back to the continent, my fourth time there. i don't know how i've been so lucky, but on each trip to africa i've seen either the black or white rhino. my heart breaks knowing these magnificent animals are on the decline, being murdered, because of illegal poaching. i don't know what to do besides share this video and perhaps some links where there is more to learn and make a small donation. if you have an interest please watch the video and visit :
wwf - world wildlife fund   international rhino foundation   save the rhino  african wildlife foundation
(there are more, these are the ones i know).
thank you for taking the time to read this and a big hug if you've watched.
xxx lori

  1. Thank you Lori! I am already working to save elephants and would be honored to help the rhinos too. I so want our grand babies to see all these creatures!

PS-email soon, but yes please on the video :)

  2. Thank you so much for sharing Lori. I honestly do not know how we are going to stop this whole slaughter driven by ego and greed!

All the NGO's are so hard at work, and we can only hope that we are on the brink of changing this rhino tsunami.

    Here's a firsthand look at rhinos: http://fleeingmuses.blogspot.com/2012/01/rhinos.html

  3. Ditto what Janet said: "ego and greed." The incredible greed of people saddens me more and more each day. Best of luck to you and your hubby as you journey to Africa for a wonderful cause!

  4. Thanks for sharing, even though it makes me sad.

I hope to go to Africa one day, so I look forward to hearing about your trip (my dad's parents were ex-pats and he was born out there before they all moved back to the UK - now that he is gone I feel like I should go to his birthplace)

  6. Hello Lori. Very powerful video. I shared it on twitter. James and I have just watched a nature documentary about bird migration over Africa - wonderful stuff. ( It was called Earthflight, a BBC/Discovery channel show.) then I logged on and the first thing I saw was your post.
Sending love and blessings. Thank you for showing the film. xx

  7. Hi Lori
The support browser on my computer wouldn't allow me to see the video although I can imagine it was powerful. What amazing, gorgeous animals! Are these your photos from your previous trips?
I am passionate about animals so yes, I can understand the feeling of wanting to protect and preserve. Thank you for your passion ♥

  9. lori, i couldn't watch it all. i am so aware of the horrific sadness and cruelty of what happens to the animals on our planet and i am figuring out how i shall act, what i shall do.

thank you for posting this. every healing thought each of us puts into the universe contributes. and money: every coin helps.

    when will we ever learn?

    with love

  10. I couldn't get through the video either, so sad. I am amazed at what humans will do to the lovely wildlife that brings joy to so many!

  11. Tracey, luckily things have improved for the african ellies which is great news, and definetly due to the help and support of lovely people like you. Thank you!

Janet, this is so disturbing to see the numbers rising. It seemed that we were hearing better reports in Zimbabwe three years ago. While we were at mana pools there was even a rhino group, there to monitor, working closely with anti poaching groups. I saw tams report, thank you for sharing. And yes to hopefully educating certain people (not Africans) that the potency of rhino horn is a myth!

Del, it's really tragic, especially since its happening for nothing. The rhinos horn has no power outside of being a part of these animals. And hunting for trophy. Heaven help us.

  12. Pinkundine, oh you must! Where was your dad born? You must have some amazing family stories and photos. It would be a very meaningful trip for you, I can only imagine!

Debbie, thank you. That would be a great thing to do.

Jacqui, thank you for watching, I'm so glad. I love the bbc too, all the series, shows and mags are the best. I'm going to try to find that video, sounds amazing. I like this video about the rhinos, even though it shows a couple graphic photos, it's words are, if not more, powerful than the images. The message is clear.

  13. Deb, thank you for the kind words! I'm sorry you aren't able to see the video, it gives lots of facts and figures, basically saying the number of poached (murdered) rhinos is growing year by year. These are my photos, from three years ago, taken in hwange, zimbabwe, on a private reserve. But even that doesn't ensure their safety or survival.

    Emma, thank you very much!

Kj, thank you, and your so right, every bit helps. This video is really more about looking at numbers and facts, delivered in a brilliant way. I definetly can't watch the graphic ones either.

  14. Karen, thank you for trying. The video shows the numbers of rhinos being poached for their horns, growing year by year. Certain people in Asia believe the horn holds super power. They are willing to pay BIG money to enjoy this power. A real tragedy for the rhino and the rest of the world who want to protect and enjoy them forever.

  16. Lori, I can't watch it. I am aware and so saddened by the awful things that happen to these and the other truly wonderful creatures on our planet. We do give to the WWF. Thank you for the reminder to keep helping them, and I want you to blow a kiss to a rhino from me! xoxo

  17. Lori, how great that you shared this on your blog where many people can read and watch. It makes me so ANGRY that out of stupidity and selfishness (imagine, killing a whole living rhino - just for one disgusting guy to feel more powerful in bed, arrrrggh! And it`s not even true!) endangered animals are killed, and often in snares or other cruel devices. It makes me vomit, sorry about my violent feelings.
Who knows someone on the Chinese education board?!!!

  18. Thanks for sharing this Lori. I get so saddened with this. I donated to the elephant umbrella fund last year and am compelled to donate to this one next.

  19. What a powerful video, Lori. How can people who cause such wanton destruction of life live with themselves; such purposeless murder. We're already a supporter of WWF, but I'm definitely looking into the other advocacy groups you mentioned--and sharing this video. I sure want to make sure there are rhinos around when I get to Africa!!! (It's on the "bucket list of travel destinations!!!)

  20. Lori, thank you for posting this. I have been aware of this problem and have been thinking of doing a post about it too, There are so many animals on my list, man can be so cruel, thank God there are people who care. xoxo

  21. Sad isn't it? I'm from South Africa and everytime I go back home, we head to the Kruger National Park and it just breaks my heart to see all the posters asking for help because of poaching.

Glad you and your husband are doing something about it :)

  22. I made myself watch even though I know their plight. Poachers are greedy. It's all about the damn dollar and not about life anymore.

I'll do what I can. I do give to the WWF as they're one of my favorite charities.

It would be a crying shame to see these magnificent animals extinct from greed.

    Bless you for sharing this.

    xoxo
