spring pockets

my sweater was completed, with sleeves and buttons. it's very soft and squishy, and oh so cozy, je t'aime beaucoup very much  :)

the buttons are vintage deer horn, i've had saved for years. finally the right project has come along for these and just the right amount.

i'm reading these (remembering to share for yarnalong), country living magazine and harvesting color, a beautifully photographed book by rebecca burgess, it's about making and dying fiber with nature, plants and flowers all explained in great detail. and then, to my complete (giddy!) surprise i found : : (see below)

in this months country living magazine, a workshop taught by rebecca burgess. and you won't believe! the workshop is in santa barbara! i immediately signed up, this is something i'd love to know more about.

and now if we might go back to the annabel cardigan, i wanted to add something to this pretty
pattern, can you guess what it is?

 it's not on the back

 and it isn't to do with the buttons

here it is, my sweater now has pockets! i've added afterthought pockets in a lovely destash green,
the silky merino malabrigo i made this with.

they aren't too big, i didn't want to add  much more to this already bulky weight sweater. there is just enough room for a car or bike key, small treasures found on a walk, and a doggy treat for my pup. love pockets.

cardigan ::  annabel  (yet to be blocked)
designer :: carrie bostick hoge
wool ::  osprey by quince
colorway ::  kumlien's gull
ravelry notes here

making afterthought pockets is very simple and fun! no skill other than making the knit stitch is needed. that and a strong resolve. you will be cutting into your knitting. you may require something to bolster your courage. a bit of jameson, neat, works for me. and so funny, but chuck couldn't watch. if you haven't made an afterthought pocket and you would like to, i could make a photo tutorial.

* and tomorrow, this beautiful hearted boy, will turn twenty six years old *
happy birthday my son

  5. You are just too clever Lori! I'm with Chuck and would have been hiding my eyes! Is it really bad of me to be coveting your cardigan? I can't help myself! Well, this just gives me more inspiration to finish my abigail so she can have a friend!
    Happy Yarn along day my dear Lori!

  8. Hi there Lori ann

    Your cardigan is just so lovely. As soon as I have finished my scarf, I am going to make myself a cardi. I really love this one and the style in which you wear it. The color is perfect for Winter too.

  10. Those pockets, those buttons, that cardigan!! great work Lori and it looks fantastic on you too!!
    I'd love to go on fiber dying course, especially one in Santa Barbara, but I can't see Richard going for the idea. All we get around here is avalanche rescue courses!
    Joyeuse Anniversaire to your little guy.
    Great photos, as usual.

  12. Very clever title for your post today. I was looking for those pockets. Your sweater turned out beautiful. The workshop sounds wonderful. I tried to come up with suggestions for what you should knit in Africa. I think as long as you have yarn and a set of knitting needles you can't go wrong.

  13. Your new cardi is so pretty - just like you! I've been thinking about that pattern, but bulky wool on my bulky self -- not sure 'bout that. But it looks wonderful on your slim self -- not bulky at all! And the pockets are brilliant! I love pockets too, and I feel naked when whatever I'm wearing doesn't have any, so 'yes please' to another clever tutorial from you.
    Blessings to you Lori Ann,

  15. Deer horn buttons...wow! Where did you get them? The colour of your pockets are beautiful. What a nice surprise, inside a gray sweater. I ♥ your leggings and stripe knee socks with boots and your dress....and that photos atop with the trees curving right, so artistic.

    Let me also tell you how beautiful are those surroundings in which your sweater is modeled.

  45. Oh, I love it - all of it. The unexpected pockets in their pop of colour, are a pure delight. I've been toying with the idea of ordering that Harvesting Colour book, and now I'm REALLY itching to do it. And lucky you, getting to attend a workshop!!!!

  46. I love everything here (your dress too!)
    I have not been inspired by anyone else's annabel cardi-but yours makes me want to knit one! Any tips (beyond the usual pulling the first stitch or two snug) for preventing laddering in those garter sleeves? I had to knit Lark's camilla sleeves on a tiny circular needle because I couldn't manage otherwise--but much prefer working on dpns.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. there is almost no way (that i know of) to prevent a small amount of laddering on the purl rounds. it meant slow going to snug up each 1st 2nd and even the 3rd stitch. and i had to have a talk with the wool, channeling e.z. " i am the boss here" :) thank you.

  47. Lovely sweater, Lori! Those green pockets make it even more special. Have a wonderful time at the knitting workshop and with your son's birthday. Good times! Dyeing yarn with plants is on my list to do soon but I am just going to wing it with all the wild flowers across the way from my farm and we will see what happens. Can't wait to hear how yours goes.
