nuna

one day while looking through etsy i came across the shop of ragga eiriksdottir. she had the most lovely brightly colored wool, i somehow really needed. so different these pinks and blues were than than the neutral colors i love.  quickly i added one of each to my cart and then excitedly waited for the parcel to arrive from iceland! when the icelandic wool arrived i thought uh oh, what have i done? these pretty, candy colored wools are nice to look at but what ever will i make? it didn't matter, i thought, if they just sit here on my shelf looking so cheerful, that is good. two years went by and at times i would look at these little candy hued cakes and think, what will you be? and then one day they spoke. we want to be a shawl. really? okay then! happily knitting away on the twilight stole pattern from a fine fleece. will i be brave enough to wear it? nuna means now in icelandic, i think i will now   :)    ravelry notes here.

many many years ago i had a pen pal, actual letters! with a lovely woman in iceland. i don't remember if my fascination for the place occurred before or after our friendship began, but it's remained strong, i love it there and i've never been! some favorite icelandic links:

  18. such pretty colors!! The shawl will be perfect---for Alaska!!! (we had some friends who just recently returned and said it was unseasonably warm while they were there--and they were far past the Arctic circle!!! The heat wave definitely won't last!!!) Iceland is most definitely on my "bucket list"; hubby can't quite "get it"--but when I get him there, he'll see!!!!!

  20. Lori, thank you for the introduction to these yarns. The two that you chose have beautiful colors and I can see why you would consider them as little cakes.

The knitting that you have begun is looking very lovely also. Isn't it remarkable that we could be knitting with wool from Iceland? It is just the sort of notion that makes me truly love what the web can do.

I have heard that the Iceland government provides great incentives $$$wise to visit the country. Apparently , an inexpensive fab vacation :-)

  23. OOOh Lori, I will look at all of these links with a fervour.
My one true continental LOVE .... is ICELAND.

Do have a ques for you. Could you take your knitting needles in the plane
overseas? Probably not. Sigh. Wondering what to do for 32 hours.;/
I have a bone crochet needle... perhaps i could sneak that onboard.

    1. me too, can't wait to go! yes! knitting needles can go on the plane. i've flown many times (domestic and international) since the new restrictions, circulars and dpn's are no problem. what's not allowed are scissors, even tiny ones. the folding travel ones are okay though. you can fly and knit!

  35. Hi Lori, the colors are like lovely sherbert. That yarn definitely looks like it is meant for knitting rather than crochet. I read comments above regarding travelling with crochet or knitting. I've always been able to take my hooks (although they did question them when we went to Nepal last summer) -- and a friend from Canada several years ago brought me back a Clover thread cutter. The blade is inside the disc -- can even wear it as a pendant on a necklace. Cuts perfectly and so easy to carry. Happy August! Tammy

P.S. Yesterday I started practicing with my drop spindle. I'm using some yarn in my stash, just so I can get the hang of it first. Then I'll start actually 'spinning.'
