one mitt and the big deal

this week i have knit one mitt.

tonight i hope to cast on for the other.

here are the wool and needles (waiting patiently) for me to begin. the pattern is ysoldas, found in 'my grandmother's knitting' by larissa brown, link here. i used the same wool the book called for, jamieson & smith. after having a look at all the colorways, i became completely indecisive, and so chose the same colors as the model pair. tonight after looking at the photos of my mitt i realized you can't see the sweet picot edge at the bottom,  its a design element i really love.

here is a close up of the thumb detail. such a pretty pattern, now i'm  imagining it made up in other colors.

i like these photos in the book

here is the back view. i wished i had one of my girls here today, to help model these. but the sweat pant and tshirt ensemble, self timer and spare tiny leica will have to do (oh boy do i miss my camera, off at the repair shop, but i am truly grateful to have a backup!). the book i'm reading is 'the history of love' by nicole krauss. it's been hard to put down right from the start, which is pretty much why i only have one mitt.
raverly notes found here.

the big deal :  i'm reading another book. this one arrived a few days ago. it's 'photographer's forum, best of photography 2011' it's a hard cover treasure chest of stunning photos. i'm thrilled that the folks at p.f. chose to use a simple one of mine. (exciting big deal for me).     :)

here it is, it's the surf photograph. thank you little rock house and wee knitting rock granny for propping my book open, and thank you so much photographers forum, sigma and serbin communications, for sponsoring this and liking my work.
yarning along with small things and all the other lovely knitters and readers here.

Your mit looks lovely- colourwork mittens and gloves are fun to knit aren't they? :)

Your mitten is so pretty. I haven't tackled colourwork but every time I see something as beautiful as your mitten I think I must gather my courage.

  5. Chnaging colors puts me off! I wish I could stand behind you and look over your shoulder while you knit. But probably it goes so fast that your needles are whirling! How can you get so much DONE in such short time, and often so complicated patterns. I draw my hat for you, Lori, can`t you start a class on Usedom?

  6. Congratulations on the photo, looks great. As does your glove. I really want to learn fair isle , my MIL was fantastic at it, my one regret is that I never got her to teach me before she died.

Also like your rock ornaments, what a fantastic idea!

  20. Yeah for the photo in the book! What lovely lighting. And your mitt is beautiful. Sometimes I vacillate too about colors and yarns and just want to go with the same as the pattern suggested - I mean, that's what drew me to the pattern in the first place, right? Hope you get your camera back soon. Love the little rock house - did you paint it?

  23. Yes, it IS a BIG DEAL and I am proud of you. Your photos are exquisite and I study them to see all the details. Love them.

Thanks for your sweet words. I think all the drugs I am having to take are making this much worse. I can open my eyes now...but that is about all.

Sending love. Come up and visit our great knitting shop in the old Sauer Adobe on Chorro St. Wait till I am well and we can have lunch along the creek.

    Love,

    S

  24. Your photos deserve accolades. What a wonderful way to begin a new year. Your knitting also is amazing. Such a lovely mitten. I often struggle once I see a yarn used to use another initially. Some time the item needs to be seen and touched to release the other possibilities.
