full

my weekend was full to the brim, not even counting puppies and kids. i took long long walks, through the marsh and the beach and back home again. it rained and then stopped and the sun came out and made everything sparkle. and shimmer. puddles on the way like stepping stones to guide me. once or twice making the necessary testing of the splashability of the water. half way hoping it would start to rain before i got back home.
then, impulsively but not quite, because i had been thinking about it, i slipped my hair into two braids and snip sniped off a bit. or more. turns out i cut ten inches off. gulp. ! . well, miraculously that is exactly what locks of love requires. so it was the right decision, right? as my dear friend geli says, it is good to take a decision and then do it. i have to say though my husband chuck was a bit shocked when i came out of the bathroom holding up my braids, one in each hand. and my hair just a wee bit crooked.
i finished my scarf too. blocking is a real challenge now since owen likes yarn more than anything else on earth. much to my dismay. i need either a bigger table or a gate. or maybe he'll grow out of it?
then, my daughter and i made a big pot of soup and a loaf of bread for sunday night dinner. our guest of honor was her friend here all the way from wisconsin. we had on the super bowl and he tried to watch it. but i think he was having more fun looking out of the corner of his eye at sadie and travis and owen rolling around on the ground and at kimberly and i in the kitchen.
yes it was a very full weekend. i finally got the children to bed (they are spending the night here tonight),they want one last kiss and cuddle for owen, one last request for a drink of water and finally can we hear "night mantra" and "it's a big world", one more time?
yes darlings, how could i say no?
these words are for you...

  1. busy bee and you cut off your braids - brave but exciting! Reminds me ... I need a haircut too

    Bread smells divine. Soup --- a few more weeks before it's chilly enough to put a nice hearty soup on the menu

    Hugs to you and Owen (hang in there!!)

  5. Oh, wow, you had quite a weekend! The pictures from your walk were just beautiful - I love walking when it's almost raining and maybe a little blustery! And then your big hair adventure! I'm always in favor of cutting off hair and experimenting a bit. It grows back, after all... Do you like it shorter? Your scarf is gorgeous and that bread looks amazing!! Soup and bread - one of my favorite meals! I'm so glad you had such a fun weekend!! Love, Silke

  6. Until we got our Basset Hound I didn't know dogs like playing with yarn. Beaux is constantly in it. Can't keep him out of it. I put it on a shelf and he figures out he can stand on his hind legs and get it. Put it up higher and yes you can do the baby gate. We do. Had to put one over the nook where we keep the garbage can. Yes...he turns that over several times a day.

    Silke, oh soup and bread are my favorites too. with five children it was the most economical way to fill everyone up and use lots of veggies too!
    i love long hair and i miss mine, but i like it shorter alot, and like you said, it grows!
    thank you so much for the compliment, i'm happy with the scarf!

  9. HOLY MOLEY! you are the best photographer. THE BEST! lori, the world you see is a gift all by itself!

    what a wonderful weekend. walks, kids, bread, and snips. and your wonderful way of seeing :)

    my weekend was more sedentary but quite delightful too. i don't know why but i'm giggling right now thinking of mary chapin carpenter's song lyrics:

    sometimes you're the windshield,
    and sometimes your the bug.

    i think we both had windshield weekends.

    love you lori,
    kj

  14. I almost died when you wrote that you just up and decided to cut ten inches of your hair off - that would take me weeks to agonize over that decision! Good for you for sticking to your guns and being spontaneous, though :)

    Soup and doggies rolling around...mmm, sounds like the perfect Sunday afternoon :)

    nancy, thank you so much, i'm hoping that is what will happen. something we can take for granted can mean so much for someone without.

    natsy, oops! i'll get chuck to take a pic. it's short, shorter than yours now i think!
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    tracy,
    i've never done anything like that before. it was thrilling to just cut, and not think, i've always wanted to donate though, so i'm glad.
  16. I love the spontaneity of the impromptu haircut! Your crowning glory is now much shorter but you had enough of the golden stuff to go around - share - and you are still left with a beautiful head of hair. Beautiful shots too I might add ...
    I just got my dose of California! Ahhhh
  18. Hi Lori
    what lovely shots of your full weekend...does your hair feel lighter...I am inclined to let mine grow and grow - which it does very quickly then one day I up and off to the hairdresser and have it taken off to the shoulders and start again...
    I always wear it tied back in the heat so it really makes no difference...
    Happy days
  19. lyn, thank you! yes, there is enough to share. I'm so glad you enjoyed it here, there must still be snow where you live?
  20. i love that you gave away your locks. i am growing my hair out right now and i have a feeling that one day i will wake up and want to chop it all off. i have now decided to do this mindfully for locks of love. :)
  23. kavita,
    i've been wanting to do it for a long time. i love long hair, but i love the idea of donating even more. my whole family has been doing it, my sister, my daughter, and now my nephews, yes, both boys are almost there. that's awesome you are too.
  26. Can you send me that bread recipe along with the snail one? Mine never looks so - what`s KNUSPRIG? (crunchy?)
    But tonight I`m going to bake a bread, just to see how it will turn out.
    Your post with all its details was beautiful, Lori, as ever! The child who will get your hair will feel not only pretty but sheltered!! Thank you for this generous idea!
  30. The good thing to remember about hair is: it grows back! And yes what a great thing to do for those who really have no hair at all.
    Also I like to cut my hair off now and again just to let go of my history. It always feels very liberating. And then a nice professional trim will get it back to looking great again.
    Loved looking at the pictures - all that sunlight and unfrozen water and all that COLOR. Fantastic. Thanks.
  31. The first two pictures are of such immense beauty, they really hit me, like something out of this world! The swan's bent neck is exquisite too, well, all the pictures actually. You have a wonderful way with words and pictures. Cutting your hair off like that was quite brave, two of my daughters are blond like you and one cut the whole left side of her hair off when she was about three or so. She went with scissors to the bathroom and the hair was gone! Good thing hair grows again!
    Wishing you a wonderful week in your beautiful hometown!
    Reya,
    Your town was on the cover of the Times this morning, they said it's the worst storm since record keeping began in the 1800's. Good Grief! If you need a break, we have room for you! Stay warm and keep the faith, spring will be here soon.
    Merisi,
    thank you so much, I am so happy you liked my photos. seeing these things does the same to me. even bringing tears to my eyes at times. my daughters never did cut their own hair (i've heard stories!) but i shocked myself that i did it. i'm never comfortable in a salon so it seemed like the natural choice! you have a good day as well, thank you!
    a very kind comment was left, but they asked that i remove it after i read it, so i did. thank you though thoughtful commenter.
  35. Oh, Lori. You don't know just how much your photos and words warm me. I love that you are surrounded by such loving family members who keep your life full and your heart smiling. I was admiring your beautiful hair in that mirror shot of yours, and you've cut it off! For a good cause, though. :) Your scarf is incredibly delicate and gorgeous! Congratulations on finishing it. I'd love to try to make one, though I'm not nearly as skilled a knitter. And little Owen. Awwwww. You have to forgive such a wee little furball who sleeps upside down with his legs in the air, no? Hahahaha. Thank you for sharing your life. Thank you for that video. It's a beautiful, beautiful song. Happy Valentine's Day weekend!
    xoxo
